re: Bill Simmons insinuates Gayle is a clueless gold-digger

He also said in that same podcast episode that there is a pretty persistent buzz that there's a chance this team might get sold and Gayle would rather just own the Saints instead of trying to do both. Then he mentioned that by holding onto Davis the franchise would be more valuable when shopping it around.
This tells me all I need to know about his "research" into Gayle and the Pelicans.

Simmons is, and has always been, a garbage-tier Garrison Keillor wannabe. His knowledge of sports is barely above the level of an average fan.

As harsh as it sounds he’s not wrong. The clueless part is obvious but Rita wasn’t “crazy” until she entered the picture. Of course Tom sided with his wife, but from things I hear they are both equally responsible for acting like vincdictive women

By all means, name them. There are other guys, Shams who are reporters-news breakers. Kevin Arnovitz who does real in depth pieces.
But people like Simmons, Rachael Nicholos, Lowe, Chau, & others understand the landscape better than most. Stein is good. Windhorst is hot air, I find Jalen and Jacoby to be way off on most things. No one at FS1 really has a clue.

I can assure you that the facts are far more nuanced and complicated than what any sportswfiter can uncover. The litigation alone would take virtually unlimited access and time to analyze.

Simmons isn't a true NBA analyst. He's someone who people like to hear talk about basketball because he likes to come up with theories on things.
He's not going to know the ins and outs of every team. In this case, most of New Orleans knows that Rita owning the Saints & Pelicans was our worst case situation, and that Gayle was our best case.
I'm actually not sure if most know.

Rita has always been batshit crazy. Gets it from her mom.
It didn't become public until the inheritance became public, but she didn't just turn into a lunatic over night.

He wrote a 900 page best seller on the NBA. He was part of ESPN/ABC studio coverage(not that he was particularly good at television). His podcast lives in iTunes top 25. His 1 on 1 interviews with Players & coaches are excellent. His draft diary and trade value articles are insanely popular.
Now is he breaking down plays on the screen? No, but the dude has been covering the league forever.
I’m not saying that I think Simmons knows the Pels organization in and out, but Verrier has a good idea about it as anyone, including Kush, MM and the lot.
Disagreeing or not believing Bill Simmons take on the Pels situation does not mean that Bill Simmons is an idiot or clueless about the NBA. Those takes are based on a defensive mechanism one has to a region or team.
Some of this board has rightfully called out the apparent apathy this organization has shown for the past few years.
Finally-after letting the head coach take the brunt of this media nightmare that multiple NBA journlasits, reporters, & commentators called out the Pels organization, Gayle Benson came out swinging. Impressively so I might add, in what is her strongest move as an owner of either the Pelicans or the Saints. It signaled to fans & ticket holders a sign of confidence going forward. Finally.
That being said, if there are rumors at All Star weekend, I don’t think Simmons is pulling completely out of thin air. This is the same guy who called Roger Godell a coward on air, openly blasted ESPNRadios flagship team of Mike & Mike, among other stands against authority. Point being, he does posses some journalistic integrity. The thing about company wide conventions-what the All Star weekend really is, is that rumors are floated about everything and everyone.
This fanbase, or this board is overreacting. Be mindful of it, & follow up on it. The FO leaks will of course be denying it, so keeping ones proverbial ear to the ground until another lease is signed is something all Pelicans fans should be aware of.

Simmons' whole shtick is being a homer and making outlandish trade propositions. He doesn't know shite about the Pelicans

There were stories for several years about Rita being a party animal and scissoring her way through New Orleans
Posted on 2/18/19 at 3:58 pm to hendersonshands
Heavy rumors that basically the last straw was her doing coke with Lenny Kravitz in a suite at a game. Allegedly.
Rita was a real piece of work.

My god, the President could build the Wall with the thick headedness on this board.
I never said Simmons knows the Pelicans inside and out. But he does know the NBA better than most out there.
His whole “shtick” is commentating from a lifelong fan of the NBA. He’s propelled into far greater things. His Kevin Durant interviews, as one example, are incredible.
The prologue of meeting and interviewing Isiah Thomas-after years of bashing him and other shitty GMs across the league, was great writing.
His trade value article this year-spot on. What do teams want more than anything in the era of 1+1 contracts, buddies from AAU planning team ups, & heavy player movement? Young players on rookie deals. 7 years worth of player control, basically.
The guy has an eye for where the league is headed, what teams are moving in the right direction, which star players most guys want to play with, who can play “Finals” level basketball, & when guys make the leap.
If you get beyond the gimmick of “Boston Sports Guy” the dude knows his NBA.

All women are.
but lucid Tom Benson thought enough of her to appoint her heiress, and groomed her as such for more than a decade. Even have her running the arena team and named executive VP of the Saints. She even helped him run the Hornets when he bought the team. She was the pick
for a man that made so many good business decisions, writing Rita out of the will was not one of them. Such a shortsighted decision, especially AFTER you had purchased a second franchise and had no true heir to the teams, or at worst, someone you had groomed to be in a hands-on ownership position once you've passed on.
Posted on 2/18/19 at 4:02 pm to Lester Earl
A lot of Rita's behavior didn't become overt until after the Irrevocable Trust was set up.
At that point she thought she could do whatever she wanted. She was wrong.
