I used to work a few tournaments a year for CBS inside the ropes as a spotter. Talking to CBS techs in the compound before air time, I can verify based on what I heard that you are correct.

I happened to be at the right place at the right time in 1991. I had a pass to the Monday practice round at Castle Pines, Late in the afternoon I saw Ken Venturi on the driving range. To make a long story short, he took me to the CBS compound and introduced me to Chuck Will, the Associate Producer. He hired me on the spot and I worked the tourney for 15 years. I also worked the Colonial in Fort Worth for about 12 years. The guys & gals behind the scenes are the best in golf television. Back then they were led by Frank Chirkanian, the Ayotolla. There's a reason he had that nickname. It fit him to a T.
