These are hobbies. A teacher knows the pay and the time commitment related to them before they take on the task.
So you don't realize that coaching can be mandatory in many cases? It is not always voluntary.

The way it usually works is that a school will hire a coach and give him/her teaching duties to justify the salary. Not the other way around.

If a teacher is working that many hours a year I question their efficiency.
Im in my 15th year and I work to the contract. 6 and 3/4 a day 182 days a year. Always use my 3 personal days and typically use 6 or 7 of my 15 sick days. Add 4 or 5 snow days and my hourly is boarder-line OT baller status
The time off is nice but I use it to flip 2 or 3 houses a year.
Also I don't know many people that can handle a classroom full of middle school kids and teaching them up on the daily..

Every school system is different, but many provide a syllabus and lesson plans for every class which may include tests or guidelines for tests.

Most teachers I know and have known in my life all had side gigs, especially during the summer.

Any college graduate that cant make a passing score on the Praxis core knowledge test should have their degree revoked.

I like my job, I'm not in a union, and my standard of living is okay by me. My pay as a coach may be in the $2 per hour range, but not my hourly rate as a teacher. I'm not sure how this person does the maffs.

You’re kidding right? A high school football coach is just enjoying a hobby? Teachers that get a 4-year degree to teach music are just doing a hobby? I’d say 50% of the employees at the school I work at put in extra time, either because it’s required outside of the workday or it’s absolutelt necessary to be competent at that position.

Equating coaching to a hobby is just silly. That’s like saying doctors practice medicine because they enjoy it as a hobby. Obviously, many people try to work in a field that they would enjoy, but it doesn’t take away the job requirements.
The world of high school football is pretty cutthroat. Go and tell those coaches that they are lucky they get to enjoy a hobby. There’s a lot of time and effort spent on making sure little Johnny knows how to tackle.

Take away their pensions and give them more salary and let them build their retirement on their own. They can pay a proper portion for their healthcare insurance.

I’m talking about working at the school.
If you want to be worth anything in your profession, you’d better be doing something outside of those school hours. As you mentioned, it’s called being a professional.
But the fact that there are people on here who also state that ‘nobody tells them they had to work there’ and things like that contradict what you mentioned about putting in time to your craft off the clock.

I agree with everyone who complains about teachers. Public schools should be abolished and people should pay privately for their kids educations. The parents willing to pay more can send their kids to the better schools and the ones who can’t get the seconds and thirds.
Wait, that is what has been happening in Baton Rouge for thirty years. It’s worked fantastically so far.
