If he enlisted at 17, went to basic, Ait,, jump school, and ranger school; It's unlikely that he served in Viet Nam.

Fishy to say the least. Would have been over there not much earlier than ‘73 or so. The war had completely ratcheted down by that point. Only like 160 deaths a year in ‘73 and beyond.

The last Marine combat unit left Vietnam in (edit) June 1971.
Phillips would have been around 16 or 17 years old and it’s almost impossible for him to have actively deployed to Vietnam by that date at that age.
