Only if he claims he was and actually was not... If he had just said "I am a veteran" or "I am a Marine Corp veteran" and had actually served, then combat experience would not matter...

Well, there is a quote with Phillips saying that a hippie spit on him and called him a baby killer when he returned.
I don't know if he said returned from where, but it is clear what picture he is trying to paint there.
And he uses the term "Vietnam Times" veteran. Kinda weird way of saying Vietnam era, but maybe that's what drunks call it

As best I could understand over the background noise “As a Vietnam veteran times ... served in the Marine Corps 1972 to 1976, got out in May ... the year after the war ended....”
