Does the state sell any of its timber on public lands? I have always thought the wildlife would be much better on WMAs if the timber had been managed better. I always see really big open woods. I admittedly have not been on a lot of WMAs so was hoping someone knew.
Yes. I don't know about Louisiana and I'm not sure about your smaller state parks. But big WMA's like 10,000+ acres most have some programs to harvest timber.

It's only January 16, but you definitely win the award for Worst OB Post of the Year.
I had no idea Ralph Abraham posted on the OB, but I'll be damned...here you are.

Cash in hand plus a permanent decrease in the portion of the budget that pays to maintain those lands.
Yeah, and then the state will piss away that cash. Also, you are clearly ignorant to the fact that the overwhelming majority of LDWF's funding does not come from the General Fund, but is generated by dedicated funds, license sales, and Pittman-Robertson and Dingle-Johnson funds.
And anyone that thinks public lands are a socialist idea can't be trusted. If it weren't for public lands, we would be just like Europe where only the rich can hunt.

So those private citizens ( actually would be corporations) would charge $4k membership fees?
Kinda defeats the purpose of those lands in the first place

LDWF, they get no money from the state.
False and very illogical. All “state” money comes from somewhere. Whether it’s a tax, fee, etc. Its the state’s money once collected.

You leave Ralph out of this. When he beats JBE he’s going to sell your WMA lol

What kind of stupid shite are you trying to say exactly?
It's dedicated funding. It can't be used for anything else.
And it doesn't come from the General Fund, so it's not saving the state any money.

Glad to see this board smack down this ignorant thinking. Well done gents.

Who cares. It’s still “state” money. So the statement that LDWF receives no funding from the “state” is false.

The number of hunters in the country is dwindling steadily. So you want to take away public hunting lands so the numbers get worse? Brilliant. You have any idea what happens when they get too low to have an effect on legislation?

So, what would the LDWF do with the money it receives from licenses if there were no WMA's to manage?
Donate it to EBT/Food stamps? That sounds like a wonderful idea.
ETA - also, that money from license would decrease drastically if those WMA hunters didnt have anywhere to hunt. So now the state is not getting revenue at all.

So you want to decrease access to land? And humans have proven they will clear cut and destroy the environment. Hell to the no. I would rather stop fighting war, and decrease the military. Excess could go to MORE public land.

They already do that. Recently did it with the Jackson/Bienville WMA
LDWF didn't own the land for Jackson-Bienville. LDWF leased it from the timber company to be used as a WMA. Lease was up and the 2 sides couldn't come to terms on a new lease deal.

Your stupidity knows no bounds, does it?
Yeah, they are a state agency, so it's "state" money. But it can't be used by anyone else, and they don't get it from state appropriations, i.e., the General Fund.

Waste it. The exact same as they do now.

Maybe. Is the right of people to have food, but that can’t afford it, not important? What about Medicare? Certainly healthcare for the elderly is more important than Jimmy Bob’s access to some land so he can go shoot him two or three button bucks every year. Or no?

So you only want people who can afford to buy hunting land or spend $1000-2000+ a year on leases to be able to hunt? You do know that LDWF charges $15 for a WMA permit to hunt those lands and that helps cover the cost of acquiring and maintaining land for WMA's?
How much money in LDWF's budget will dry up when average people stop buying hunting licenses because they don't have public land to hunt on? And how much more common will hunters trespassing on private land to hunt since there's no public land available?
I wouldn't never gotten into hunting a few years ago if I weren't for being able to hunt public land. If I didn't have nearby WMA's to hunt then LDWF probably doesn't get $800-$1,000 or so from me in the form of a few years worth of hunting licenses before I sprung for the lifetime license.
