Exactly.

From the article
Sounds like he maintained his speed and proceeded just like the cyclists weren't there. Both cyclists were wearing high visibility gear and had lights on.
Many drivers will buzz bikes (drive toward bikes while speeding up, sometimes while honking) in an effort to say, "fool, get off the road because vehicles have the right of way." Sometimes buzzing someone goes bad and the vehicle hits the bike because the vehicle was closer to the bike than the driver thought.
I was buzzed this morning on Goodwood in front of the main library (with driver honking the horn). There are signs up in front of the library with a picture of a bike that says "share the road".
Some drivers just don't get it.
The white bike parked in front of the library symbolizes a cyclist who was killed there, and was put there in memorial of the cyclist who was killed there.

During the investigation, officials learned Alexander failed to reduce his speed and move into another lane. His 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe struck both cyclists from behind.

15 days is pretty light but the dude wasn't impaired and it was an accident. No reason to ruin another life over it

That indicates he not only saw them, but decided to pass them knowing he couldn’t give the required distance, while not slowing until after he hit them.
then he should be going to jail for longer than 15 f'n days

Thanks for that link. It contained more info than I had seen.

If I were the judge and someone deliberately hit you trying to "buzz you" I would throw the book at him.
That guy was stupid.

Sounds like he saw them too late, there was a vehicle in the other lane, and he tried to fit between them but didn't.

Yep. I've had the same on Claycut and Broussard. On the weekend, where I'm going 25 on my bike in a 30. Ridiculous.

It was determined that cyclist was at fault.

I don’t see the reason for locking him up for 20 years.

In that situation, do you keep cruise control on or do you brake some to make sure everyone stays safe? That combined with him saying he had cruise set at 35 while the science shows that's not true means he's probably full of shite.
I see crap like this all the time with only cars involved. Cars parked on the street which reduces the clearance. I get there first and go forward, not only does the other car not wait but they don't even slow down. We had maybe 1 foot of clearance between our vehicles. This happens on a regular basis. People need to stop acting like their cars are tanks and that their time is so valuable they can't do the correct thing and delay themselves a few seconds.

I had a boss who rode her bike to work until she was buzzed a couple of times. Last straw was when she was forced off the road and crashed. She decided it wasn’t worth riding the bike to work.

this guys direct actions caused someone to lose their life and another to be seriously injured
You can apply this same logic to the individuals that recreate on busy highways.

I'd like to think I'd brake and do some evasive maneuver I've seen in the movies to keep everyone safe.

This. He should’ve been shot for resisting arrest

This kinda thing infuriates me. And not just car on bike but car on pedestrian stuff too. "Woo, hey, look at me im going to roll the dice with a guy's life because I want to get to a red light five seconds faster!"
You take these risks when you are out and about, so i dont see the point in him spending the rest of his life in jail. I also think this guy should never be allowed behind the wheel of a vehicle again either.

it wasn't purely an accident. he saw them before he hit them. whatever happens in between, call it bad luck or negligence, is the driver's fault. this should be negligent homicide at a minimum. this is the kind of shite that makes our justice system look like a joke.

Austin has a couple hundred miles of bike trails and even builds pedestrian bridges, BR has maybe 6 miles of dedicated bike trail, a stripe on main roads called a bike lane, drivers that go out of their way to harass cyclist, and all the while people crying about why cant BR be like Austin or Seattle,

The ot is like:
Criminal murders a councilman? 15 days is too much
Upstanding citizen defends himself from a hobo? Death penalty
