and childhood mortality. The 10 lowest states are all in the southeast with their heavy minority populations. I despised the bankrupt Obama admin but Michelle tried to get school children eating right which was a good thing. Her being from Georgia she understood. Why Trump, who has a knack for cutting through the BS and making the logical decisions didn't continue that is hard to understand. He has been a gift to black America otherwise and has done more for black Americans than any president since Lincoln.

Their were a lot of problems with her reform. Embracing junk science was one of them though. Her plan called for low fat foods.

Low fat foods are associated with higher rates of obesity.

Therefore, high fat foods are associated with good weight control.

Hmmm if there’s a rhetorical question in there, you just answered it.

When you eat a low-fat diet you are conditioning your body to not burn fat. You'll burn carbs better, but not fat.

Your body's first choice for making energy is to burn carbs, excess carbs and fats get stored as fat. Burning fat for energy is its second choice.

So in order to burn more of its 2nd choice for energy (fat) you have to take away its first choice (carbs). This is what the first phase of South Beach and what the Keto diets are based around. This means nothing with sugar (including HFC) like bread, soft drinks, syrup, etc. It also means no starches (rice, beans, potatoes). This can be tough to do, especially when eating out, but when it can be sustained for a week or two most people will begin seeing results because this is how your body is designed to work.

I dropped a good 30lbs over the summer by doing this (meals consisted primarily of meat and some veggies). For me the real trick was finding foods within the criteria that I could eat regularly (I'm the type that if I like something I can eat it often).

This time of year SUCKS for this sort of diet when you live in South La (and I spent the whole holiday season cheating so now I'm having to pay the price).

It was a terrible plan from the start. Not to mention, the govt shouldn't be telling us, nor our kids, what to eat. This coming from someone who hates unhealthy eating. I mean, ketchup was considered a vegetable under that ridiculous program. A 90 lbs cheerleader and a 240 lbs football player got the same amount of calories, in what world did that makes sense? That is why high school students started protesting - in their own way - and rejecting the absurdity that was Michelle's food plan.

I mean, we could dive into exactly what diet to serve, but that sort of nonsense I listed above is way more important.

Because "healthy" food for children, that ends up in the cafeteria trash can, instead of their bellies, does no benefit.

So we need to solve a cultural issue with government solutions?

Yeah that will end well...

It’s not the federal government’s job to make you eat right and live a healthy life style.

All of this. We struggled to keep weight on my son in high school. He was active and just couldn't gain weight. If anything, they should have been loading him down with additional calories, not cutting them. It was insane.

Seems contradictory but higher fat foods makes you more satiated than lowers fat foods so you have a tendency to eat less.

I don’t think you can lay all of this at the feet of “minority populations”.

But the gov wasn't really forcing kids to eat at school. They had the choice of eating the public school food or bringing their own from home. So the gov was never "telling us what we can and can't eat".

There needs to be a M Obama program part 2 with more sensible options. Good eating habits start young and most public school kids aren't getting any good habits from home.
