Bought my Submariner in 97. I was in Indonesia on business just as the Asian Financial Crisis hit. Got it for a steal as the currency had collapsed and they were desperate for US dollars
Great watch. My attitude is that I would save money in the long run by purchasing a watch that I would never replace. 22 years later and that plan is working perfectly
It’s also looks frickin awesome with my pinkie ring and gold nugget bracelet

Yea, the $1200 used Rolex I passed on 16 years ago sells for $15K to $20K now. Nobody wants them anymore.

One of my favs is the Submariner with the blue face. Not sure if it’s a status symbol or not.

People think of Rolex’s as some gaudy gold watch with diamonds but there is a sub culture of Rolex collectors who pay big money for watches that the average person would not even notice.
I’ve had people tell me my watch is fake because it has a NATO strap. Doesn’t really bother me because that is the look I like.
If you saw this watch would you even think twice about it?

Yes, but I'm a collector.
Very nice by the way.

Are Rolex Watches Still A Status Symbol?
To the dress suit at work crowd, yes.

Whether they are or not, I really like them and I will have a brand new submariner one day.

In short, yes.
But, I have never cared for them mainly because they seem too pretentious. I have a 20+ year old stainless steel Tag that does just fine for me.
Really don't like today's watches because the face/body is so fricking big.

I used to say that, but I've killed two 007 and one 009 in the last year.
I think I'm just too rough.

Lol. I actually have a Patek Philippe and like a previous poster I don't wear a watch anymore.

I wear a Cellini- few know its a Rolex

I have a $150 fossil that I wear all the time and get compliments constantly. Probably tells time better than a rolex as well.
I think its just the name "Rolex". There are much better watches out there.

This is true, but a lot of people think (or act like) Rolex is the most expensive watch brand or something, when in reality it's basically just a high quality mid-level luxury watch.
If you're more concerned about the quality of the watch (rather than the brand) and still want something in that luxury realm, Tudor is a great alternative to Rolex.

This is what i'm saying, for most people its more of a brand recognition thing (to show off), than a quality watch thing.

My truck has a clock. My phone has a clock. Wife has several of my watches in her jewelry box, and breaks one out for me when we "go out" to formal functions.
Otherwise, I find a watch and any jewelry to be uncomfortable to wear.

So who's the poser? The guy who has to pawn his rolex, the guy who buys an imitation....or the guy who gets the watch that he wants at a bargain price.
And I don't wear a watch, just a simple observation.
