I have not handled this rifle, but the Sauer 100 line is really intriguing.

You might spend a little more than 800 for the wood stock, but man they're good looking rifles. Everything I've read about them is positive. ETA: Guaranteed 5 shots MOA at 100 unlike Tikka which guarantees 3 shots. However, in standard mag capacity is 5 vs 3 in the Tikka, and it doesn't protrude downward.

We recommend the SAUER Hexalock mount

This might be my next one in 7 mag:

My 2 A-Bolts are under MOA with no mods and Federal ammo. You can’t ask for much more than that.

My dads old Model 700 270 shoots way better than I can. He laid down a many a deer with it in his time. My oldest son has it now and it’s deadly. I’d say that’s the story on MOST modern rifles today as far as accuracy is concerned . You can’t go wrong with a Tikka, Savage, or Browning . The current Remingtons aren’t what they used to be from a QC standpoint.

Are they making the new A-Bolts like the original?

I have an original and I love it. Great gun. However I have heard horror stories on the 2nd generation and even worse on the AB3.

Quick look at the website shows the A-Bolt hasn't been in production since 2008.

Cabelas has an X-Bolt 270 for $809 before the $100 mail in rebate. I would personally prefer the 308 or 7mm-08, but the X-Bolt is a great shooting gun. The biggest downside to the X-Bolt is very limited aftermarket. But if you don't want to make a bunch of changes it is a really great rifle.

I want to try the Bergara, they have great reviews. And of course the Tikka is a great gun too.

The automatic response on this board is always Tikka - my advice/opinion - go look at a Tikka and a Weatherby side by side, and shoulder both. Knowing that both are the same price and same accuracy, the choice will be obvious in my opinion.

I love my 700, but this is a true statement.

I have had mine for 4-5 seasons. No rust on it last year. Left it clean and in a climate controlled room during the off-season. It is now completely covered in surface rust, has a little bit of pitting, and I can see some rust in the barrel. I am pretty pissed. I can either pay $250 bucks to have the whole thing broke down and cerakoted or i can pay $450 and have a new McGowen barrel put on.

Am I missing something. Every M77 I've ever seen is pretty plane jane wood/blue with some checkering on the grip and fore end.

Look for a Browning with engraving. I like BAR's.

You tell me which is prettier?

Although an arguement could be made about bolt vs. semi auto.

The BAR is a beautiful rifle, but I can't stop looking at that horrible silver scope on that stock image you found.

ETA - what weatherby are we talking about here? Vanguard?

ETA2 - if the OP hasnt noticed yet, this is akin to the Ford vs. Chevy debate.

Savage Axis .308 is a damn good rifle and you'll pay way less than $800

I own a Weatherby Vanguard S2 and a Tikka T3. Both are wood stock 308’s with the same mid-range Leuopold Scope. I have an indoor range near my home in Pass Christian that allows rifles (100 yard range). I have not adjusted the trigger on either. I use the same Lapua ammo in both. Both shoot sub MOA. The Weatherby is heavier and kicks less. The Tikka has a slightly lighter trigger. The fit and the finish on both is acceptable, but the Weatherby is clearly more attractive. If I ever sell one, there won’t be any hesitation that it will be the Tikka, but I won it in a raffle and haven’t felt the urge to sell.

Looks like a black scope to me. I think it's just lightened to show contrast between what the gun looks like with and without a scope.

It looks kinda funny without sights. I like a standard read with a hooded front sight.

Another vote
its what i have but it has gotten some heat on the internet because its bolt design is just different than everything else. It is based on the german mauser. And people either love it or hate it.

fair enough, but 'more attractive' is definitely subjective

with that said, i would love to have a vanguard 2

My FIL has or had (he trades guns constantly) a couple of Sauers. Those were some really good looking rifles. They shot really well also.

Now that I look more closely, you're right. I'm colorblind FTR. Nonetheless, that pic bugs me.

Absolutely. I think that may be what they call the "Safari."
