I put A Christmas Story away for a few years and watched it again last night.

I like the movie. I saw it at a young age and thought it was a little quirky and liked it a lot. Then, commercialism took over and tried to milk this movie bone dry by making sequels, live musical versions, commercials based off of the movie, playing it for 24 hours straight on TBS and overall just became victim to widespread popularity, making it less of a cult film. I got really turned off to the movie and haven’t watched it in about three years, but last night I caved and watched it, and in my humble opinion, it captures the Christmas of childhood very well and holds up despite all of this country’s efforts to shove it down our throats. I also had the closed captioning on and never realized the kids name is Scut Farkus, I always thought it was Scott.

we all had that one year where we wanted one christmas gift really bad and we would do anything to make sure we got it and this movie captures that perfectly

Charlie Brown warned us about commercialism ruining Christmas. A Christmas Story is a textbook example of how far we've fallen.

If it weren't for the 24 hour marathon, I don't think A Christmas Story would be a very well-known movie at the level of say, Home Alone.

The Ref is great. Cat piss?
But I think A Christmas Story can withstand the blatant overexposure, as it works as a series of disconnected scenes. If you pop it on, you can watch any scene completely out of context with the rest of the film and enjoy it. It's a really well crafted vignette of 1950s childhood, not just Christmas.

A Christmas Story is to the Holidays as The Sandlot is to Summer. They’re those classic period pieces that encapsulate the essence of childhood in America and and are each worthy of an annual rewatch.
I think my favorite part about both are that the sights and sounds of those movies take me back to the places I first saw them as a kid: my grandparents old house at night just before Christmas and my family’s very first house on our old neighborhood cul de sac. So much of what happened in those movies completely mirrored the emotions and routines of being an American kid with imperfect but caring parents and friends, even if we were separated at the time by about 30-40 years.

The fact that I can relate to Ralphie despite growing up about 50 years after he did says it all.
