What breed of dogs have you had and what’s been your experience with them?

I’ve owned...

As a kid:
Rat terrier mix - great pet and squirrel dog, never caused any headaches. I would like to have another one just like it.
Mutt beagle from the pound - almost immediately ran away. Barked too much.
Brittany spaniel - adopted dog, not much of a pet which probably says more about me than her. I don’t think she liked city life.

As adult:
Boxer, for 13 years - great pet, friendly, laid back, only barked at strangers, probably not good for much other than laying around.

boxer/mastiff mix from pound...great looking lazy dog...didn't bark...tumor factory...had to put him down about 2 years ago

bullmastiff...great temperament and a complete sweetheart...doesn't bark...but she sheds like crazy, drools, and smells

Yorkie...neurotic barking demon who hates squirrels with a passion

Golden Retriever - have nothing remotely close to negative to say other than the shedding made me buy a Roomba

Dachshund when I was a kid - back problems had to put to sleep when it was 6 or 7
Collie - great dog.
Mini Schnauzer - another great dog. My girlfriend now wife gave one to my parents for Christmas. She was smart and a great dog. Just a pet though obviously. My dad loved that dog.

Shih Zhu - bought my girlfriend now wife one. Very sweet but unbelievably dumb. Was never house trained.

2 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. By far the sweetest personality dogs I've ever owned. They were wonderful. I cried like a baby when we had to put them down. The breed suffers from heart failure and most will have it.

British Lab - He's mine. Trained him and he's trained well. Only things he wants is attention and to please. Very smart and very easy to train (after all I trained him).

Labradoodle very sweet and very smart. Extremely smart actually. Really need to work with her more.

Mutt - he's most likely a schnauzer and yorkie mix. He showed up at my parents house. He's runs the house.

As a kid 2 dachshunds, first one was an a-hole, second was a good dog but barked at every noise.

Now I have a 5 year old vizsla. Good dog, wouldn’t hurt a fly and has been great with our 4 and 1 year olds as they have grown. Still has energy like a puppy though.

Lab/Golden mix (or so I think) - 5 years old now. Had him since he was found in the woods around 9-10 weeks old. Best dog that has ever existed on the planet.

Huge pitbull (he adopted me a year ago when he was dumped in my moms driveway almost dead) - he is probably 5 or 6. Couldn't walk for a month when I got him. Had every kind of issue you could name and weighed in at 68 pounds. Now he is 100+ pounds and a force. Still has a little gimp in his back legs. He is nuts when it comes to prey, would probably kill multiple animals if I didn't keep him leashed, but is the sweetest cuddly dude inside with the fam

I recently bought four old Lassie movies in a DVD collection and it got me interested in collies.
Did you have it in town or the country?
Good with kids?
How much barking?
And anything else you remember.

Pack of beagles as a kid. Lots of barking for no reason when in the pen. Had one jip that we left out the pen when we moved houses that ran a lot better once we did that.

Black male lab in high school. Didn’t retrieve worth a dang. Dad got rid of it when I went to college.

Have a yellow male that’s 8 now. Sweet dog. Very laid back. Has never met a person or dog it didn’t like. Can be stubborn at times. Only barks when startled. The puppy aggravates him everyday.

Bought a black lab female 2 years ago. Sweet dog. Barks if you startle her. Hard headed at times. A retrieving machine. A bumper is like crack to her.

collie/shepherd mix - beautiful animal. Somehow saved toddler me from a pack of wild dogs.

Fiest - pet that wanted to be a squirrel dog.

Olde english sheepdog/spaniel mix - got her in third grade. My dog for 17 years.

Bassett Hound - Funny, smelly, slobbered all over the place. Ate his own turds...I learned to run if he ever acted like he was about to puke.

Rescue Irish Setter - pure dam psychotic. So much so that the rescue took the dog back.

Golden - incredible animal, so happy he smiled all the time.

Spaniel mix - loves my family so much he digs holes in my yard to prove his affection. Great pet.

Unknown mix - my 70 pound lap dog. A real sweetheart who barks like a one-eyed junk yard dog.

Lots of Mutts - every kind of personality with these, sweet, mean, dumb, smart.

Shih Tzu - He was a mean little a-hole, only liked my brother. Was my mom's dog, but didn't want anything to do with her either. He pissed in people's beds when he was upset with them.

Lhasa Apso - Family dog growing up, but she was a sweet little girl, she was my buddy. Always sat on my lap and watched TV with me. Was heart broken when we had to leave her with a family friend when my parents moved overseas and I was in college.

Cocker Spaniel - Had one when I was young, remember he didn't listen very well, pretty dumb, dug everything the frick up. Still was hilarious when he wanted to be a little fool.

Lab - Duck dog when I was really young, just remember him play fetch for hours. That's about all I remember about him. He lived outside.

Current Shetland Sheepdog - By far my favorite dog I have ever owned. She is smart as frick, easily trainable. I trained her as a therapy dog so she could visit sick people in hospitals and such, not ESA or service animal. She is mischievous though. She is kinda funny as well, she is scared of heights, doesn't play with toys at all, and isn't a lap dog. So she is never on furniture and doesn't chew anything. She herds the kid for me, all around great dog except for the hair tumbleweeds. Short hair shedding I find much worse though, I can deal with the tumbleweeds much easier.

Really want a German Shepherd eventually.

Childhood dog - Golden Retriever. Smart and big time retrieve drive. Would break low hanging branches off of trees to play fetch.

Current dog - Golden Retriever. Not as obedient as childhood dog. More energetic and plenty smart. He can get into some mischief if he hasn't had a solid hour of running around open space every couple of days.

Shelties are very similar to rough collies, just smaller. They can be a little more mischievous though.

They don't need a ton of exercise, but you do need to work both breeds mentally or they may destroy stuff.

Both breeds love kids, Collies tend to be more friendly with kids than shelties for some reason.

Sheltie are known much more to be a talker than a collie, but expect both to signal a lot when something isn't in the right place.

They both will herd people to the right place, it's hilarious. They will nip at you to get you there. It does shock some people who aren't expecting it. Running makes it worse.

Expect "awwwwwwww Lassie" all the time no matter which you get. Well not if you get a color that isn't sable.

Yellow Lab - More energy than he knows what to do with, knows commands but only listens when he wants to, very needy and affectionate, terrible retriever but he loves it. I love him but he’s too much for many folks.

Doberman - He has been great, except for the fact he is such an a-hole. but he means well. He just can stand to be away from me.

He actually cornered my neighbor the other day as he was walking up to my newborn. I was so impressed to see him being protective of the new guy in the house.

We got him when I was 11 or so. He was great. I don't remember any barking but he might have when someone came up.

We lived in the country. Had 20 or so acres.

didn't mind other animals either. As a matter of fact, our cat would sleep on him in the winter.

I have free range chickens. If you tell me that a collie will keep those bastards off my porch I will be getting a collie.

And I guess I could train it to keep youngins away from the road.

as a kid:
four Labs over the years. All were great dogs in the field or by the sofa, though not all got that privilege to the same extent.

as an adult:
Golden Retriever- found on side of the road. Incredible dog. Made me a fan of the breed.

French Bull Dog. Changed my mind about preferring large breed dogs. This little girl has been the most entertaining, loving, enjoyable dog Ive ever owned. Will definitely have another.

German Shepard (rescue)- neurotic as hell. Scared of her own shadow but got along ok.

Blood Hound. Aloof, hard headed, difficult to teach. didn't want to do anything he didn't feel like doing. Lousy house dog but enjoyed having him around. Not one I would recommend unless you have the patience and outdoor space for him.

3 Lab mixes (rescues)- all good dogs, low maintenance, and eager to please. No major issues. Liked to wander, but would come back when called (eventually).

Chihuahua/dachshund mix (rescue) pissed everywhere, and way to energetic. didn't take shite off of his larger kennel mates, but always needed looking after.

3 other mutts-(rescues) breeds unknown, but they've all been good dogs. easy keepers and little hassle.

Dachsund- very entertaining and protective of the family. Smart but stubborn and hard to train, but it can be done. They have a huge personality and make great pets. Think they are bigger than any dog out there. The ones I've had we're damn near fearless.

Shetland Sheepdog (mini Lassie)- extremely smart and great family dogs. Ours would look out for us as kids. She would attack a wasp of it flew too close to us. Extremely loyal but need a lot of space to run. Very active dogs. Grooming isn't horrible but it isn't easy either.

Mutt- I currently have a mutt that my wife and I adopted from a shelter when we first started dating. He is the best dog I've ever had. Friendly, loving, smart, and a funny personality. If I had to guess he is some sort of terrier and dachsund or chihuahuah mix.
