Interesting to note that, according to U.S. Soccer Earnie Stewart put together a list of 33 candidates, whittled that down to 11, then spoke to all 11 before settling on a final two, which he interviewed.

It would have been a meh hire if it was done a year ago. Now it’s just embarrassing.

I like Gregg Berhalter, I just don't like taking a year to hire a guy we could've hired a year ago.

Pulisic? That's why I said he might change the system a bit. We're very thin on options for a #10.

So wait...does this mean that after one of the biggest frickups in USMNT history, and over a year later, Earnie & co. only officially interviewed TWO goddamned candidates?!?! Jesus Christ that’s some amateur type shite right there.

Earnie has only been on the job since August.

That actually sounds about par for the course. Most coaching hires have very few official interviews. Sounds like he had discussions with 11 coaches, let's say 4 of those mutually agreed that they weren't right for the job. He looked at the remaining 7, chose his top 2, officially interviewed them, picked the one he liked best.

Earnie hasn't even been working for the organization for a year. Not sure how Columbus fans would have felt about Berhalter knowing he was going to ditch them at the end of the season.

Then the new guy created the GM position, which then needed to be filled. Earnie was announced in June. He took over in August. (and it's not like we weren't trying to secure the 2026 WC or anything)

August
September
October
November (when the decision was made)
December (when it was announced)

So you're looking at a 3.5 month coaching search. During which he talked to many current and past players, GMs in the domestic league, etc., created a profile for the coach, made a list of 30+ potential coaches, whittled that list to 11, had discussions with all 11, picked the top 2, had a formal interview with both, decided on one, negotiated with both Gregg and Columbus, agreed on a contract, and finally brought the recommendation/contract to the board during the last week of November.

And all of that on top of trying to familiarize himself with our current pool, help put the team together for our friendlies, attend the friendlies, etc.

Read: USSF only interviewed Americans, or those who manage in American domestic leagues.

Crap search. The American way lost us a spot in the World Cup. Limited Klinsmann, hired Bruce Arena, handcuffed him as far as player pool choice. Literally the USSF is making a priority of building the MLS at the cost of the National Team.

It blows my mind the arrogance it takes to expect your team to compete on the world scale when you have the managers by the balls.

Hire a European manager with experience who is willing to take on a rebuild. Give him the keys and keep your arse in the front office.

Jurgen asked for two full-time jobs and we gave them to him. How did we limit him?

That may be who got the "official" interviews, but do you really believe that's all we talked to?

It is a meh hire that really doesn't matter much. In short, we now have an "okay" manager overseeing a team with marginal talent.
