In the 80’s and 90’s we had shows on MTV like 120 Minutes, Alternative Nation, and Headbanger’s Ball. Magazines like Spin and Rolling Stone were also good resources then.

The 21st century gave us Napster, Mediafire, Pitchfork and other review sites, and message boards. Those last few are still around, but I don’t find much music I like there anymore.

Has the amount of quality music being made decreased significantly, or am I just not looking in the right places?

Spotify. The Release Radar and Discover Weekly playlists are great sources of new music. This board is a great place to hear about new stuff too.

I go to shows and I listen to independent radio (College Radio, Community Radio, etc). Most of the "new" artists I find are either played on those stations or were an opening act for a band I wanted to see.

I heard of Crash Kings when I saw them opening for Jet.
Menzingers when they opened for Rise Against
The Sword opened for Clutch
Handsome Jack opened for All Them Witches

The other routes are just by having a lot of friends who listen to a lot of random music, or are musicians with a lot of influences I wouldn't know about otherwise. For example, one of my friends introduced me to Streetlight Manifesto and Vulfpeck.

I've had good luck with on-line college stations. To me they offer a wider array of music than services using my past listening history. I'll usually lock into a particular show, DJ, or night that fit's my taste.

Forgot to mention two others: NPR Tiny Desk and also just going to shows and paying attention to the openers.

I discovered Anderson Paak on his Tiny Desk Concert and listened to it on repeat. I'd listened to Mac Miller sparingly before, but his Tiny Desk was legit.

Of course, sometimes they suck, but I've discovered some great bands as openers. Some examples:

Saw Old Crow Medicine Show Open for REK in 2000 at Tip's and were incredible. This was long before the Wagon Wheel train started rolling.

Balance and Composure opened for Coheed in New Orleans about 4-5 years ago and I was instantly hooked. That is one of my favorite bands ever and it's a shame they're done.

i'd like to second the recommendation for NPR's tiny desk concerts, and add that portland radio station KEXP regularly has in-studio guests that are worth checking out, and i've caught wind of cool new shite that way.

I'm quite the country guy - our bedroom TV is on Music Choice Today's Country unless I am watching sports or Cops.

Wife's car is always on an XM music channel.

As previously documented, I run a local music calendar and attend a number of shows.

Edit: I've found sites like Texas Music Pickers help me find what I like.

I just find music today to be kinda boring and it lacks direction
Kayne west and all that rap stuff is just awful...
