How come they didn't also declare war on the USSR?
It's odd that isn't discussed more. Churchill seemed to want war with Russia. Some in US general office did too (cough) Patton(cough).

The Anglo-Polish Agreement in 1939 pledged UK and French support of Poland if they were attacked by Germany I think.

This is a very good question. And to be honest, I’m all my decades of studying WWII, I’ve never been able to find a good answer. It’s like the fact the Soviet Union invaded Poland, plus the Baltic Countries and Finland, is just glossed over.

The truth is, if you compare the actions of the Soviet Union and Germany between September 1939 and June 1941, there is little to no difference between the two.

I’m about 99% sure it guaranteed to support Poland in case of attack from any country.

Yeah, but we all know that it meant Germany. Besides, UK and France probably knew declaring war on the USSR would have been suicide.

In fact, I think the German-USSR non-aggression pact came after the pledge to Poland was made.

I think that's probably your answer. Also it would have provided Germany an opportunity to take full advantage of their weakened state.

Not that a forced alliance would've resulted between the fascists and commies...but the fear of that result was absolutely a consideration.

Good lord, the Red Army plus the Nazis?

frick that fricking noise.

For me it seemed that the Western Europeans all had a policy of "anyone but Germany" in terms of who could have an empire.

Germany had killed/wounded 5% of the UK and French populations in WWI. I don't blame them for being heavily focused on defeating the Nazis and making the USSR an afterthought

Because the Western Allies, Britain and France, were COLLUDING WITH THE RUSSIANS. That's why.

France and Britain (correctly) assumed that any cooperation between stalin and hitler would be short lived.

Germany was a more direct threat to the France, and the Western nation’s knew they would eventually need the Soviet steamroller to defeat hitler.

ETA: I believe the Soviets also waited a few weeks before invading Poland after the Germans went full blitzkrieg Sept 1. The Soviets annexing the eastern half of Poland was secondary to the Nazi invasion that precipitated it.

My guess is that England and France weren't trying to support Poland to start with. They invaded Germany because they were concerned about Hitler's rise to power and also the militarization of the Ruhr. Basically they wanted to enforce the Treaty of Versailles or at least some semblance of it.

Poland was just the tripwire to check the rearming of Germany, and the USSR had nothing to do with it. Hell, the fact that the USSR could serve as a check to Nazi Germany is what made them allies.

That was the Polish view, but the British said the agreement was limited to Germany by virtue of the first secret protocol.

Hitler signed a non-agression pact with Stalin that he didn't want to break yet. He wasn't even close to being ready for a two front war in 1939.
Turns out he was never ready.

Russia was IMO as bad or worse than Germany in many regards, especially when it came to taking innocent lives (not that this had anything to do with war, but it deserves mention), and especially in their invasions of countries, ie, Poland, Finland, Romania, and the Baltic States. Patton was indeed dead on with his assessment of Russia. He knew they were garbage before it became transparent to the rest of humanity post WW2.

We did indeed get in bed with the devil when we included Russia in Lend-Lease.
