I understand this is discussed often, but it is getting to the point that something needs to happen.

What can LSU athletics do to enhance the atmosphere for the games? I know this may come off as a "back in my day" post, but I'm seriously wondering what the Hell has happened.

I do think the seating for the students is awkward...it's curved and there is not enough premium seating for students because of the band and the reporters. However, there is ZERO excuse for students to be sitting during a college basketball game. I've watched probably a hundred basketball games this season already, and LSU is the ONLY one I've watched where students are sitting. WE ARE #19 IN THE COUNTRY!!! This team is fun to watch and I don't understand it.

The students lead the crowd. I don't expect mid 40's to mid 60 year olds to lead LSU chants or be the ones to energize the crowd. BACK IN MY DAY: We used to get there hours ahead of games. If you weren't there an hour early, you wouldn't be anywhere near the bottom or have good seats. If you sat down, you wouldn't be able to see anything.

So what has changed? Why are the students so terrible at standing and cheering for 2 hours? Can anything be done? It has a direct effect on the atmosphere which has a direct effect on why teams absolutely humiliate us from outside. It's like playing on a neutral court.

Also, my solution:

Kentucky's student section does not have seats. They only have the ability to stand where seats would be. I think students should be forced to stand during games.

The fan apathy for this program under Wade will be the reason he bolts when a better job comes along.
The student section is terrible and hardly anyone shows up unless they give away free food but even Popeye's wasn't enough to get them in.

It's not just the students, the oldies have all the courtside seats and if they decide to show up, sit the entire game as well. If they don't show, they refuse to resell their tickets or give them to someone who will show up.

The crowd did get into the LA Tech game late but no reason not to bring it the whole game.

These problems solve themselves. Our student section was as good as anyone's in the 80s-early 90s.

There isn't a single student at LSU who has known a consistent winner at LSU in his lifetime.

Just when LSU is "coming back" they have a shitty season. Consistency will solve this.

Back in your day LSU was good at basketball. LSU hasn’t been good for like 10 years. Once we go into sec play rolling, the fans will show up. We don’t have basketball fans right now, or at least the bandwagon portion. Win games; they will come.

People forget the home Kentucky games, was it Oklahoma a few years back, etc. PMAC still gets loud when it needs to.

Kentucky's student section has no seats and is behind the goal. I've seen students on here complain about both.

The lower section where the band used to be barely ever fills up and if It does its just students sitting down, stretched out. Its pretty pathetic.

For whatever reason, a loud basketball crowd really doesn't kick into gear until after the bowl game. I guess its just life at a football school. During the basketball golden years, football was so bad that everyone's energy was channeled into basketball. Would love to see it get back to that point though. The atmosphere of a rocking PMAC rivals Death Valley.

As for the students.....no offense but students just aren't creative anymore. If they can't chant STTDB, they are kinda at a loss what to do or say.

Move the damn prime media seats away from the student section. Been saying this for years.

It's early the PMAC will get rowdy. Give it a little time.

06-07 and 07-08 were pretty awful basketball years.

#19 in the country and 4-0. Memphis had a PAID attendance of 9k. Memphis is a historical basketball power, albeit rebuilding last few years, but have Penny as coach. 9k paid, meaning probably 7k actual. That's pretty sad for the #19 team in the country

Making it to the final 4 in 06 certainly had an influence

There was a larger crowd for the home opener on a Tuesday, my guess for the Memphis game attendance is it being a Friday night and tons of high school football being played. As long as LSU continues to win more and more will show up.

Move the student section to the side of the court and problem will be solved. Absolutely ridiculous how its currently setup. Seriously one of the stupidest things ive ever seen.

Something needs to be done. We can kiss these recruiting classes goodbye if the atmosphere doesn't improve. Skylar Mays out there posterizing opponents and there's no chants? No nothing? Basketball is the most fun sport to be apart of as a student, the dome boxes in noise and you can have a more direct impact on a game than football... Pmac should be more fierce than death valley

I’m a student and I go to the basketball games, but why do people feel that students NEED to go to the games? Why do you care what 18-22 year olds do with their time? If you want it to be rowdy, get all of your buddies that enjoy basketball and get it done. However, the student section will fill out if we continue to win into SEC play.

The biggest issue I have noticed about the PMAC is how far away the seats are from the court. In places like Rupp Arena, the student section feels like it's on the verge of spilling out all over the hardwood at all times. In the PMAC, even court side seats are like 10-15 feet from the in-bound line.

The whole PMAC feels vacant, spacious. It feels straight up awkward to yell in there, like you're screaming in an empty church. Even when there's 8 or 9 thousand people there, it feels empty. That is architectural more than it is cultural.

Churches are designed with acoustics in mind. If you've ever been in a badly designed church, it feels awkward to sing along with the choir. It's the same way at the PMAC. That building feels dead and empty unless it's 90% full or unless the student section is as drunk and raucous as it was for the Ice Dome game.

I appreciate the crusade, but LSU's inconsistency over the last 20+ years has led to this. Brady would win the SECW, then bottom out the next year. Hell, he went to the Final Four in 2006 then finished 6th in the SECW the next year.

Outside of his first year, Johnson's teams were boring and bad. Jones brought some excitement (crowds showed up particularly in the Simmons year) but it seemed like time and time again just when LSU was building momentum they would get a huge crowd and promptly lose the game to kill the momentum.

That happened to Wade with the Bama game last year. Lose a hard fought game vs. UK. Unexpectedly win 2 straight road games after than. Get a huge crowd vs. Bama...and lose. Momentum shot.

LSU hasn't made back to back NCAAT appearances in over 10 years. Like it or not, casual fans will only show up to watch winners. Also, while basketball die-hards know this OOC schedule doesn't look too bad, the casual fan doesn't get excited for games against SLU, La Tech, or some directional school from North Carolina they've never heard of. Even Memphis had been out of the lime light since Calipari left 10 years ago. Plus, 6:00 pm games on a Tuesday night aren't prime time to bring in good crowds.

Football is always going to be the main attention getter in this town. That's particularly true in November. Once December rolls around, most of the students have left for a month. But the reality is that if/when LSU becomes a consistent winner, the crowds will show back up en masse. No one gave a shite about LSU basketball in the mid 70's. Likewise, very few people even knew LSU had a baseball program in the early 80's. Once those two starting winning on a national level, the crowds started to show.

Mind if I use your "back in my day" theme and start a thread?

Students stopped going to games and the best seats in the pmac stayed empty. Now LSU charges a lot for those setas and they are all sold out every year.

This is the mentality of LSU students.
