Which would prefer for your football team? Elite D/terrible O or opposite?

Would you rather win/lose 56-53 or 21-17?
Those are the only two options.
Either way you have a good team... 7-5 to 9-3 type team

I think time and time again a dominate D has proven that it wins more championships.
Defense wins championships. 100% true

Don’t think I’ve ever seen a team win a championship scoreong zero points

I'd rather lose 21-17. Giving up 50+ points a week would not even be enjoyable to watch.

Nobody has lost one giving up zero points either

It’s easier to find a competent OC and install an offensive system today than it is for D I think. The Elite D/bad offense provides a better path forward for your program so I choose that

Teams with the biggest discrepancy between offensive and defensive FEI
Great Offense, Bad Defense
Washington State- #3 Offense, #91 defense (8-1 record)
Georgia Tech- #12 offense, #93 defense (5-4 record)
Ohio- #8 offense, #108 defense (6-3 record)
Ole Miss- #7 offense, #104 defense (5-4 record)
Great Defense, Bad Offense
Cincinnati- #93 offense, #4 defense (8-1 record)
San Diego State- #112 offense, #17 defense (7-2 record)
Cal- #116 offense, #18 defense (5-4 record)
So would I rather watch Washington State, Georgia Tech, Ohio, and Ole Miss or Cincinnati, San Diego State, and Cal? I would prefer watching the former rather than the latter. The elite d/terrible o teams are probably a little bit more effective although not by much.

I’m a Jags and an Ole Miss fan. I’m currently living both these scenarios. I’ll take the good defense. At least it gives us a shot in every game. Knowing how awful Ole Miss’ Defense is, I can point out a head of time, the game we will get blown out. I just stop watching when the Rebs are on defense. It’s cringey at times to watch Bortles and the Jags offense, but at least I’m not shutting off my TV like we have zero chance.

Who has won more championships in the 2000s: LSU or Oregon?
Hell, teams led by Craig Krenzel have more championships than Oregon.

As an AU fan I’ve seen it both ways and it’s funny how it changes how you watch a game. Touchdowns become ho hum and a simple defensive stop is a huge deal. It was so opposite during the Tub years. Now we are back to terrible offense. I’m rambling but neither are much fun.

give me the good offense/ bad defense combination just for the optics of it. The puritans love the 13-10 type games but I'd rather watch my team light up the scoreboard.

It really depends on your talent level.
If you have Bama/LSU talent, give me elite D. LSU has essentially made a living the last decade with bad offenses and great defense because of their talent level.
If you're a middle to lower tier program, an elite offense is what keeps you competitive with a weaker talent pool (e.g. Baylor, West Virginia, Washington State).

The better defense would win more games but holy shite is it boring.

In this day, you very seldom find elite defense like we did 1970s or even 1980s - everything rules etc is geared toward the offense. It’s tough saying that you’ve only scored 10 points in last 3 games vs bama.

opposite i guess
an insane offense always has a chance (like TTech last night)
an insane defense needs supreme luck to overcome obstacles

Not when you can't score.

This is a double-edged sword bc certain historic teams like the 1981 Chargers went 10-6 with elite O/terrible D but lost ultimately bc they couldn't play in cold weather, controlling for inclement weather and other circumstances that ground productive offenses, I'd likely prefer elite D/terrible O in this hypo like the 2000 Ravens, 2015 Broncos, early 80s Killer Bees pre-Marino etc unless the elite O in the equation was the K-Gun early 90s Bills or the Fran Tarkenton Vikings
