I really wish I could have been alive when Queen were in their heyday. I have a few of their concerts on DVD and they are among the very best I have ever witnessed. They had a way of turning their performances into theatrical productions. They were definitely #1 when it came to entertainment. And what's crazy - their live performances sounded just as good (if not better than) the studio album versions of their songs.

Take this one: Save Me.

Exactly, which is why I am wondering why you used him as a comparison

I don’t want to get into a tit for tat started in a movie thread, but be fair. Both were iconic. Has done things never heard before. Nirvana basically set the stage up for grunge/alternative rock in mainstream. They are considered the fathers of a genre of music.

Except that’s nowhere close to the plot.

so i can only assume this movie is prob a lazy puff piece.

Nirvana is known for three things:

1. Smells Like Teen Spirit
2. Grunge
3. Kurt Cobain's suicide

Their music is obviously a matter of taste, but I think I can say with 100% accuracy that their songs are no where near as iconic as Queen's when you take both discographies into account.

Of course you can argue that Queen is the GOAT. Music is Art which is all a matter of opinion.

I said there is no argument which is different than saying you can f argue.

No. I don’t take opeinion. It’s like you can’t read.

Saw it today and absolutely loved it. Maybe not the best movie of 2018, but at the moment my favorite of the year.

Agreed. I enjoyed the hell out of it. Not a great movie but it’s very solid and certainly enjoyable

I have not seen the movie, but some queen fans i know were disappointed, and feel that Freddie would shite all over it, and that the band members who were left had 2 much input.

Rolling Stone Magazine, for whatever reason, has always disliked Queen.

They hated any band in the late 70's that didn't wear leather jackets and play punk. They absolutely hated Toto. Crushed them every single review.

I thought Sasha's version got turned down because the band didn't want it to focus on his bisexuality. This movie was pretty gay. Rami killed it. Loved him since his Cajun character in Band of Brothers or whatever that other Tom Hanks military series was.

They notoriously hated Led Zeppelin...which I think is discussed in the movie Almost Famous.

They're more interested in being controversial than anything else. I remember one of their Top 50 lists where they dismissed bands like the Eagles as not having a place in any Rock list. Then a decade later they'll list Hotel California as one of the most important Rock albums. They just like to stir shite up.

They like to be...well snobby.

Anybody who does something different is an instant classic.

They loved Beach Boys Pet Sounds...in fact, even to this day they have it #2 as the greatest rock album of all-time behind Sgt. Pepper (which was also trying to do something different.)

Now those aren't great examples because people still listen to all those songs...and a ton were very commercial still to this day with the Beach Boys especially...Wouldn't it be nice, God only knows, you can still hear in movies and commercials.

But the point stands, Rolling Stone loves them some albums that appear avant garde at the time...their #8 greatest album of all-time is the Clash.

To them Queen was plastic stadium rock.

They have Nirvana, tons of Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Chucky Berry, Robert Johnson, Stevie Wonder, John Lennon (solo), Joni Mitchell, Ramones, Carole King, The Sex Pistols, The Doors, Bob Marley, Public Enemy...all above Queen.

Glad I saw it in the theater. It was a good movie, with great music.

This thread had a lot of early speculation/rumor about Freddie dying in the middle of the movie because the surviving members wanted it to show how they pushed on afterward without him.

That turned out to be, as Brian May said, "complete bullshite":

quote:

The film ends with Queen playing Live Aid in 1985. Was there a temptation to go beyond that?

No. I think there’s a natural culmination there. And that has pretty much always been the case, from the earliest scripts. We felt that was the pinnacle – despite what some people have said in the press, who know frick-all about it. Somebody who shall be nameless said: “Oh, they’re going to portray Freddie dying in the middle of the movie, and then the rest of it is gonna be about life without Freddie.” Well, complete bullshite. This is all about Freddie, and I think Live Aid is a good point to leave it. Who knows, there might be a sequel [laughs].
