Going to have an aluminum boat built and trying to decide on what outboard to go with. Boat will be roughly 19x62 with 3/16 on bottom and 1/8 on sides. I'm leaning towards the Yamaha 115 SHO but also looking at the Merc Pro XS. Not sure if I want to go the two stroke route though. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I have a Merc 150 4 stroke and my previous boat had a Merc 60 4 stroke......no issues at all......definitely recommend Merc.......115 should do the job for ya.

No matter what you decide make sure you order. Larger outboards of most brands are hard to come by these days, especially SHO models. I just ended up having to settle for a regular 150 instead of a sho because there were none to be found

I recently repowered from Mercury to A SHO. SHO all the way and it isn't even close IMO. Let me know if you are looking for a dealer that can get you a SHO.

On a 115 4-stroke they're basically identical, just figure out which one you can get a good deal on and have a dealer nearby to service. I probably have in the neighborhood of 50 115's in stock right now.

They are both 4-strokes now, 115 optimax has been out of production for a while, won't likely find any sitting around either.

I'll be catching fish while you're trying to cold start the merc.

How much will the boat weigh with fishing load - hull, engine, full gas tank, tackle, two people, etc. ?? You might want to consider a slightly bigger engine (150 hp) to get on plane quicker -- you can always cut back to 50-60% throttle to cruise. There's often not too much $$ difference depending on how many a dealer has in stock.

That said, I haven't ever owned a Yamaha in the 115-150 range. The reason I haven't run a Yamaha is that I have never had a bad experience with a Mercury. Have run them for a lot of years (used to do a lot of tournament fishing - and scouting). You could get a "lemon" with any brand, but statistically it'll be hard to beat a Mercury for dependability.

No matter what you buy, get it from a dealer you can trust - in case you ever have issues.

P.S. We buy all our outboard engines (Merc. 50 hp to 250 hp) from David Wade Marine here in BR. I'm pretty sure he can get you Yamaha or Mercury.

Mercury and Yamaha don't make 2-strokes anymore. Anything you buy new will be a 4-stroke unless you buy an E-tec. Put a 150 or 175 on it with it being such a big aluminum boat.

The only 2 stroke on the market right now is the etech. Hung one on dads boat earlier this year and at 50 hours i love it. Loads of power great on gas and no maintenance till 300 hours.

My next motor will be a suzuki though. They are priced great.

I'll be using the boat in both fresh and saltwater. Definitely leaning towards the SHO after doing more research today. Just too many people that swear by Yamaha. What dealer are you talking about? I'm in Lafayette

Cajun Outboards in Addis. I have a good friend that works there and got me my SHO earlier this year when no one else could get one. Ask for Kirk and tell him Justin sent you. He will do you right.

Kirk is a good dude.

Unless something has changed their isn’t really a difference between a 115 sho and a regular f115 Yammy.

I’m a Merc dude. Been running them for 40 years, since age 12 and never a bad one. Yammi s are good too I’ve heard
