Near the end of his rally speech, Trump also offered praise for Civil War General Robert E. Lee, saying Lincoln almost developed "a phobia" about being unable to defeat him, until Gen. Ulysses Grant, who Trump noted had "a drinking problem," but is recognized as a great General.

Didn't Lincoln ask Lee to fight for the north and Lee turned him down?

Is it really controversial to say lee was a great general?
I watched that part of the speech, anyway, Trump was praising grant by saying he defeated "great" lee.
Lee is hardly a villain in American history. He was one of the great military minds.
It is amazing that somebody could be outraged over this. Trump was USING LEE'S GREATNESS to praise grant. That's it.

It's common knowledge Lincoln wanted Lee. He would have obliterated the South with their resources and manpower.

Didn't Lee hire Kanye to console Lincoln ?

Lol Trump plays the left like a fricking fiddle.

This is all factually correct, Lee kept crushing every general Lincoln illegally sent south till Grant.

Lee refused to fight for the North, best general in the civil war.

Lee was indubitably the best tactician of his time.

It is a mistake and unfair to judge figures of the past by modern standards. You should only judge them by the standards of their time. General Robert E. Lee was a gentleman, who was loyal to his home and family. Therefore, Lee should at least be considered a good, if not great, man by the standards of his time.

Next level troll by our president, knowing they will take his actually words and praise for grant out of context
Posted on 10/13/18 at 3:08 am to Sentrius
It’s factual, but Grant beat the brakes off of Lee.

Lee was terribly conflicted over which side he would join. Back then loyalty to your state was barely ahead of loyalty to the country.
Had he chosen to lead the union army, the war would have been over in a few months.

Lee was a great general because he had great generals under him. Especially General Thomas Jackson. Many of the early battles of the war were won because of GTJ's amazing logistical manuvering of his troops which gave him battle field advantages. I think it's very interesting that the disaster of Gettysburg happened after GTJ was killed. Especially, when you consider that his ability to manuver troops is exactly what was needed in that battle. Imho the South would have won that battle if GTJ had been there and possibly the entire war. That's why I think God called him home at that crtical moment because I'm not sure we win WW1 or WW2 with a divided nation.

He's right you know. Trump can recognize greatness.
Grants great trait was his determination but if Lee had available to him the manpower and resources that Grant had Led would have wiped the floor with them.

TRUMP had a great history lesson yesterday with the Lee/Grant story, and praising underrated William McKinley - an Ohio legend!
