What do the OT sleuths think of this story? Foul play? Or do we believe the dad?

Body Found/Identified

The body found in a North Carolina creek last week believed to be that of Maddox Ritch was confirmed on Monday to be the missing 6-year-old autistic boy, police said. "Sadly, the body found in Long Creek on Thursday has been confirmed to be little Maddox Ritch," the Gastonia Police Department tweeted. "The investigation is ongoing."

Ian Ritch says he and his son often go for walks in North Carolina's Rankin Lake Park like they did Saturday. Maddox, 6, will regularly run ahead of his father, then slow down and wait for him to catch up.
But on Saturday, the boy, who has autism and is nonverbal, got too far ahead of Ian and hasn't been seen since. Ian says he "started panicking" when his 6-year-old son did not slow down and disappeared from view.
"We were walking on a track around the lake and he decided to take off from me. ... I didn’t think nothing of it and he got a little too far away from me," Ian Ritch told "Good Morning America" in an exclusive interview Wednesday. "As soon as I got to the point where I couldn’t see him anymore, I started panicking. I couldn’t see him anywhere."

99.9% chance that dad is the culprit.

Could easily be either. I won't cast aspersions on the father yet.

Austistic 6 YO out ran his father? Must have had PF Flyers on.

Heard about this last night.
The dad is my number one suspect

The Colorado guy also kept up appearances when his wife and kids were "found dead."
I know you want the kid to live life, but if he is on the high end of the spectrum, seems like more caution needs to be in place being the kid is 6.

When we go on walks, we tell our daughter to not get too far ahead of us, and she constantly forgets that and we have to shout her back. And that's in a subdivision.

I mean really, just how far would a 6yr old autistic kid get? Was some kidnapper just waiting there for a nonverbal kid to come along?

1st thought was drowning but a body would have surfaced easily by now. Map shows the lake is pretty open and it would have been seen easily. Maybe a gator? Otherwise, I'd have to bet on the father having a part in it.

Shitty joke. Aside from the fact that it's inappropriate, the dad never said he outran him. He said the kid took off and he didn't think anything of it until he lost sight of him.
Prayers sent. I really hope this story isn't what it looks like it could be.

If the trail is by the lake he could have gotten in the water and drowned pretty quickly. I don’t know, sad story. Doubt it ends happily.

Usually if the parent did it they don’t bring along a witness who can easily confirm if what he’s saying is true.

That fact that he is non-verbal completely changes the situation when it comes to looking for him.

You have an autistic kid that is running out of sight around a lake with acres of woods nearby and is non-verbal. You would think the father would be a bit more "fatherly" and when he got close to being out of sight. He would have ran to catch up.
It's plausible that there isn't anything bad at play other than poor parenting skills.

Normally I'd think the parent is involved, but I'm leaning towards the kid got lost or drowned on accident. Hopefully he is still alive, but being nonverbal is going to make the search even harder.

It's hide and go seek in the woods. Hope dogs can find the kid.
