The White House has drafted an executive order for President Donald Trump’s signature that would instruct federal antitrust and law enforcement agencies to open investigations into the business practices of Alphabet Inc.’s Google, Facebook Inc. and other social media companies. The order is in its preliminary stages and hasn’t yet been run past other government agencies, according to a White House official. Bloomberg News obtained a draft of the order.

quote:

The document instructs U.S. antitrust authorities to “thoroughly investigate whether any online platform has acted in violation of the antitrust laws.” It instructs other government agencies to recommend within a month after it’s signed actions that could potentially “protect competition among online platforms and address online platform bias.”

quote:

“Social Media is totally discriminating against Republican/Conservative voices," Trump said on Twitter in August. “Speaking loudly and clearly for the Trump Administration, we won’t let that happen. They are closing down the opinions of many people on the RIGHT, while at the same time doing nothing to others.” Social media companies have acknowledged in congressional hearings that their efforts to enforce prohibitions against online harassment have sometimes led to erroneous punishment of political figures on both the left and right, and that once discovered those mistakes have been corrected. They say there is no systematic effort to silence conservative voices.

This is going to get interesting. Although they are private companies they are CLEARLY stepping over antitrust boundaries and also CLEARLY treating one side different than the other.

Don’t want to be investigated? Don’t monopolize the sector and THEN start viewpoint discrimination.

Politics is/affects everything, buddy; Charles Krauthamer knew this and so does Trump Nation. Politics can open our Border to invasion...and it put Jesus on the cross.

Game on. Gloves off. No more double standard bs.

I cannot and will not ever support federal government intrusion into the free market place on top of the ISP framework as long as access to the internet remains free and open.

Creating a precedent and/or legislative bureaucracy for the federal gov to regulate social media is extremely far beyond government overreach to me and it will quickly make me lose a great deal of respect and support for the Trump administration.

Facebook and Twitter are not important enough to warrant government oversight. The free market is absolutely more than capable of regulating and pushing back against those companies without gov getting involved. This screams short sited ignorance and petty politics over sound policy.

People are so far entrenched into social media in today's society that they seem to think it is some unstoppable crux of life. These companies are just simply not that important. And they are replacable. Young kids are already moving on from Facebook and there are plenty of search engine competitors to Google.

I would love for someone to rationally explain to me how Facebook is important enough to demand federal government involvement in its operations.

And please do not begin that argument from the position that this is a free speech issue. It is not.

If Facebook is silencing you, go make your own website, or use alternative social media platforms, etc...

You do not demand that the government transform a company because you do not like its policies.

Good. Start with Google. Break it up. Amazon is next. If Google is broken up, competition for Facebook etc can occur naturally.

I keep getting tweets from the Daily Show showing up on my feed. I don't follow the Daily Show and none of my followers retweeted or liked these tweets. Twitter algorithms just decide that everyone should see these tweets.

F Them.

Because it has FAR more influence on US elections than a few Russian meme bots.

This has been tried and access to Microsoft and Google (Android) operating systems have been curbed. Gab is a prime example.

They have TOO MUCH control over the platforms, it needs to be addressed.

Microsoft threatens Gab

All over an anti-Jew post. Look at the shite they've allowed on Twitter. Isis had Twitter accounts for fricks sake. They weren't threatened.

Google blocks Gab from it's AppStore

It doesn’t appear that’s the goal YET, as this EO is just opening an investigation to see if they qualify and / or violate antitrust laws.

This is where the law in regards to monopolies gets a little fuzzy. It could be argued that Google especially has a monopoly, but then is it fair to regulate as such? This is new territory and I think that’s more the purpose here than anything.

In the case of Google specifically, It’s not a free market place. Google controls it, ad revenue , access , everything. No competition is possible. They regularly crush companies that threaten their revenue partners . They make entry into the marketplace impossible because the are the gatekeeper. They actively crush “ competition “. So while philosophically I tend to agree with You, I would add that Google specially is so monopolistic that they harm the free market place.

I think you’re being willfully blind if you don’t recognize the importance of Facebook in today’s world. The default today is to look at people sideways if they aren’t on it.

My 94 year old grandfather and 10 year old niece message every day on it.

yeah i mean we can argue on the level of philosophy about regulation, but our laws actually exist and have effect

Microsoft got buttfricked b/c it included a browser with Windows, a far lesser allegation than what FB/Googe face

hell, the left is arguing how impactful social media was in 2016 (via Russian acts), but is going to defend the domestic influence (b/c that one helps them)

this is going to be a shite show

go re-read articles the Trump social media strategy

it basically won him the election

you can directly target specific individuals and cater specific ads for them. your GOP type gets a MAGA as frick ad. your union type gets a "dey took ur jubs!" ad. your moderate DEM gets an extremist HRC ad. your extremist DEM gets a moderate HRC ad.
