Not some obscure newspaper...the NY Times...

The press is completely off the tracks.

It's sad watching left flail from giving Obama credit for this strong economy to trying to convince Americans that it's bad.

Well, that’s largely correct. Having a decent paying job won’t lift anyone out of poverty if they haven’t acquired the social capital to understand how to be responsible with that salary. Hell, half of US households don’t have enough money saved to cover an unexpected $500 expense without taking on debt. That’s atrociuous; clearly well over half of households have at least one full time worker.

As a society, we are exceedingly stupid with how we spend our money. It’s why something like universal basic income can’t be successful in our culture, giving people money won’t help them for shite if they don’t know how to be responsible with it.

Tl;Dr version of the story: because people who come from shitty backgrounds and/or make shitty choices are still having problems, the success of the rest of the country is teh debil.

I don't get how you can force people to not make idiotic monetary decisions without insane government overreach.

I read a study about 15 years ago. I think it was Panel Study on Income Dynamics. I'm not gonna look it up, but one of the conclusions stuck with me:

Poor people (let's say 20K income) who actually work for it are much happier in life than poor people getting 20K in welfare from the govt.

Proper upbringing and education can help. I know it’s not foolproof but it’s a start.

wage growth is suppressed.. doesn't help. it's partly because of the "walmartization" of many markets. less competition among businesses who are hiring because the businesses are larger/more powerful than ever today.

That was a poor example for the NYT to base its story around.

Single mom
Bad choices

It’s not that safety-net programs don’t help; on the contrary, they lift millions of families above the poverty line each year.

Sure....

I read some of the comments and of course most of them believe the solution is to remove negative consequences and demand employers pay “a living wage”.

I hate leftists. I didn’t always hate them, but I see now that they are evil.

If only we had a president that wanted to keep more illegal “low skill” people out of our country thus making legal “low skill” people more valuable
