I thought 7 and 8 didn’t have them

There were random battles in their original releases. I know 8 removed random battles in the 3DS version. Probably the same for 7 but I don't know.

This is correct. 9 also had them as well. The encounter rate in the original 8 was obnoxious as hell, especially considering how big that game is.

DQ11 is supposed to be even bigger than 8, so I am glad there aren't any random encounters.

This one has been given some very high praise from DQ fans. I think you should give it a shot.

I'm very excited for DQ11, but let's not pretend like this is going to outsell FF15. In fact, they'll be very pleased if it does 1/5 of FF15's sales in the West

When has Dragon Quest ever competed with Final Fantasy in sales?

It was never a sales debate anyways. It was always, "turn based is outdated and not fun".
Games like Persona, Octopath and now DQ11 getting great reviews proves my point. Not sure why you brought up sales.

The entire Dragon Quest catalog has sold only 2.7 mil in the US.
FF 10 did that in the US alone.
With FF 7 around 3.1 million.

I refuse to believe FF 15 doesn't sell just as well if it were a turn based game.

Ya I loved the hell out of 8 as well. That game came out 13 years ago and we are just now getting what I would consider a proper follow up.

DQ 9 was a handheld only game and DQ 10 is an online MMO just in Japan, so to finally get a proper DQ game on consoles is great.

I have only played one Dragon Quest.. and I can't remember which it was... but it was entertaining while also lasting forever and a year.

I'm pretty OK with that. Its not like a lot of games where you get a nice story, great graphics, good gameplay... and its over in 10 hours and that is if you did every single side quest.

YEP played and beaten every dragon quest game.
So glad they are bringing this one to the pc hopefully we get some more Remasters like they have been doing with the ff series.
Only RPG that even rivals Dragon Quest to me is Breath of Fire.

It did on the NES. That was very much a different era.

I brought up sales because of the "get with the times" comment. Turn based games do not have mass market appeal. Persona 5 was a huge success, but it still is capped around 2 million copies. Octopath Traveler will surely outsell both of its Bravely predecssors, but we're still talking ~1.5m. Not bad at all, but not AAA and not mass market.

I don't agree. While hardcore fans want some things to more traditional, those same people will buy it regardless. They're trying to expand the appeal of the game.

I did too. Luckily, Square Enix got the game to me early, and I've been been playing it all weekend. About 10 hours in, and I'm really enjoying it. Story is a lot better than what I expected.

I streamed my gameplay if you want to take a look. LINK

We are talking about Final Fantasy games since 7 made the series iconic. Dragon Quest sales just does not compare to that

quote:

Final Fantasy VII (13,108,000)
Final Fantasy X (10,571,400)
Final Fantasy VIII (8,870,000)
Final Fantasy XIII (7,700,000)
Final Fantasy XV (7,500,000)
Final Fantasy XII (7,200,000)
Final Fantasy IX (5,731,000)

When did Square have to ditch turn based games to have success again? You make the same game for 15 with turn based combat and it has the same sales IMO. I don't think we have hit some end to turn based being able to sale in the gap from 13 to 15.

Sure the sequels to 10 and 13 did not sale as well. Nether did 9. But there were other reasons for that

Edit: omitted 6 for error

Where did you pull those numbers from. The notion that VI has 10m is pretty insane. The original release sold around 2m WW

Dang, how'd you get it early? Mine was shipped to my work and I wasn't in today...so, I'll have to try it out tomorrow.

I will check out some of your stream though, thanks for posting.

Been playing it about 15 hours now. Its good, kinda easier than old DQ games, but picking up now.

Overworld is done more in segmented, connected areas than the traditional way.

Game is very linear up until you get the ship and finally get some freedom.

They introduce new mechanics and side stuff gradually as well as party members so it takes awhile before it starts firing on all cylinders.

Pro tip: when you start a new game you can turn on 'hard mode' modifiers for that file (called Draconian mode). You can remove any or all of them at any time, however once they are off they stay off for good. So if you want challenge feel free to turn some (or all) of them on at the start. If any are later annoying you can always turn off. Wish I had activated some myself.

Dragon Warrior Monsters is probably one of my favorite games ever made... it should have been more popular than pokemon imo
