Dragon Quest XI - The last old school JRPG franchinse standing

Not sure how into JRPG's or the Dragon Quest franchise everyone is, but figured I would start a thread.
The US release of Dragon Quest XI is next week on Tuesday, Sept 4th.
For those unfamiliar with the series, it got its start all the way back in the NES era. The games were originally called Dragon Warrior for their US releases (DW 1-4 are NES classics).
Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy were sort of two grandfathers of the JRPG genre, Enix making the Dragon Quest series and Square making the Final Fantasy series. Well as we all know Square and Enix merged sometime ago.
While both of those franchises are huge in Japan, only Final Fantasy really caught on in the US, and Dragon Quest games usually went overlooked outside Japan.
But believe it or not, the Dragon Quest series is actually more popular in Japan than even FF is.
And unlike Final Fantasy, a series which has grossly lost its way over the years, Dragon Quest has stayed true to its roots and every game has been critically praised and a huge hit (in Japan anyway).
If you enjoyed and miss old school JRPG's, ala Final Fantasy 4 and 6 (2 and 3 on the SNES) or say Chrono Trigger, then Dragon Quest is your game.
The same core creative team has made every game in the series. It doesn't feel the need to drastically rework the formula or reinvent itself. The series is proud of its lineage and celebrates it. They aren't interested in turning the series into something it's never been.
If you feel like catching up on the best of the series, the best games are usually considered to be Dragon Warrior III (1992, NES), Dragon Quest V (1992, Super Famicom and 2009 DS for the first English version) and Dragon Quest VIII (2005, PS2), masterpieces for the eras they were made in.
Everyone is saying DQ XI is the best game since VIII (currently at 88 on metacritic).

I got Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy through Nintendo Power. Never really got into Dragon Warrior. I would like another rpg like Final Fantasy 9 and 12. I've always heard Dragon's Dogma had a similar feel to those.

Jeff the God of GiantBomb talked this game up yesterday. Sounds like a good time.

something that NEVER happens unless it's a fighting game or some old indie shite

He sounded extremely happy yesterday.
Edt: I really do enjoy the Beastcast. It's mindless bs but always seen to get a chuckle from me. Great background noise.

Is this game on Switch?
Edt: Yes. Might pick up if not $60 bucks.

I honestly can't listen to the bombcast anymore. It's pretty dull since Drew and Dan left. Ben is Jeff 2.0 with a never ending hardon for anything nintendo related.
Beastcast is much more fun.

I have it pre-ordered. It was tough between it and Spiderman.

Glad to see this.
The FF 15 defenders told me turn based combat was dead and I should get with the times.

I still play Pokemon. Turn based is fun. I like the strategy. What I don't like in JRPGs are random encounters. This game sounds like we have no random encounters.

I'm very excited for DQ11, but let's not pretend like this is going to outsell FF15. In fact, they'll be very pleased if it does 1/5 of FF15's sales in the West.
For whatever reason, there's not a ton of mass market appeal for turn based games anymore. I still plan on playing it though. One of two games I'm really hyped for this year.

First DQ game without them, well they exist but are limited to certain specific areas.

I thought 7 and 8 didn’t have them

False
Dragon Quest 5 >>>> All other Dragon Quests

This is a good point, V is also very highly regarded and I've heard many people say it's one of the best as well. It just never got a US release until decades later on the DS.
I have an English translation of the Super Famicom versions of both V and VI downloaded recently and will play them soon, gonna play XI first. They are the only two I have never played (outside of X which is a Japan only MMO). Not sure why I never bothered before, just haven't been on my radar I guess until now my hype for the new one.
