re: What's behind racial differences in restaurant tipping?

Get rid of the concept of tipping.
It’s ingrained at this point. I read, a while back, that when a restaurant tried this it failed badly bc people didn’t like the price increase and missed the ability to tip. I think a lot of customers like having that tip power over the server.

That right there is racist AF

Servers would never want this. Even with the occasional stiff, they make way more with the tipping system than they'll ever make being paid a regular wage.

shocking study reveals all of your posts suck arse.

The server waited on 7 people for an hour and was tipped as if she waited on 1 person. Theme of the thread, right
Maybe if they tipped 8%
Bring them their platter and a pitcher of water or two. They will have plenty of table space for them if they ordered 1 entree.

I'm saying it's not optimal for the server or restaurant

The article addressed this. Try again.

subsidize your restaurant while bending us over with $15 cocktails and glasses of wine.
eating out is already outrageous, they can afford it.
You have no idea how dumb this is.
And I'm guessing that less than 1% of the restaurants in this country are charging on average $15 for a cocktail.

anybody that has worked in F & B knows that blacks are more likely to be shitty tippers
if anybody thinks that is racist, then frick them
my wife worked at Mauby's as a server decades ago (used to be a higher end restaraunt in Mt Brook); one of her stories is about a black guy she worked with that absolutely lit the hostess up one night because she seated 3 tables with black patrons in his section back to back to back

Sure, but that's not really relevant or a cultural disparity thing.

quote:I was once a server at a restaurant - for 6ish weeks (it was a nice restaurant and I had no experience - I was probably the worst server that restaurant has ever had). I was terrible and am not fit for sales or the service industry in general. That said, I liked serving black tables. They were always super cool with me. They didn’t tip well but they didn’t treat me poorly.
In my experience, black folks are second worst tippers but #1 in most demanding customers.

I see they forgot to mention the other hijinks usually associated with some groups eating out, including being overly demanding on service and trying to nickel and dime the establishment into comping some or all of their meal for any injustice they see, real or perceived.
shite like this, on top of low or no tips, is why no one likes working weekends of certain black events like the Bayou Classic or Essence Fest.

Sure it is. What are you even arguing at this point?

she said they sometimes separately equally distribute black customers among the servers to equally divide out the shitty tips. Rather than just assign that table to the next server up
It is a good policy

The bigger point is that a group of 7 people held up a table for 8 people at a super busy restaurant for an hour and only ordered one entree and no drinks. Server should’ve made 50 or 60 dollars and probably made 15

It's never that easy.

I'm not arguing anything. I just didn't see the point in the story about a family splitting a big meal and only ordering water in a thread about tipping.

ohh man. the excuses are real up in here.
we must have different definitions of 'disposable income', because when that term comes to my mind, i don't think it applies to KNOWN social norms and standards. Such as tipping.

Because they would rather save up for the next Jordan’s instead of tipping for good service.
Of course someone as ignorant as yourself would say something just as stupid and racial as this.

That's not something white folks typically do
Can't say I've known anyone to do that
