I’d say it’s normal for people to have interests and goals and to successfully pursue those goals. He’s training for a marathon. You might want a six pack or a 315 pound bench press or to drop to a certain weight or gain weight or climb a mountain. Maybe run a successful business or earn a promotion or get a graduate degree.
Everything takes hard work and determination and yes, I would say that everyone should be participating in something.

I lift 4-5 days a week.
I like being strong.
I spent 14 years in the Army and it is ingrained in my fiber to stay fit and be able to handle myself in a scrap.
I am socialable and helpful to others in the gym.
I have a high protein diet but I eat whatever I want. I don't have chiseled abs, but I am not jealous or intimidated by the guys that have a six pack.
What you need to do....is go lift and exercise 3-5 times a week and compare you to you. DGAF about the others.
Oh, and try to enjoy the yoga pants, baw!

Being tall means I don’t really have to work out

Genetics play a big role.
IMHO, this is an understatement, because, genetics play a DECISIVE role.
Now, anyone and everyone should improve themselves and be physically fit. HOWEVER, the truly beautiful human bodies are that way largely because of Genetics -- they have superior DNA with regard to the human characteristic of having a beautiful body. Call them "Mesomorphs", if you'd like to use the Old School term for them.

EXACTLY -- and, being tall is a characteristic that you inherited via your parents' DNA.
GENETICS, people. It is THE decisive variable in this equation.

Yeah but genetics don’t make you gobble down that double whopper with diet soda every day for lunch and then follow it up with 3 hours on a couch after work

tgrbaitn08,
Relax. You in here being a spun up juice-head ready to fight is making a strong case for mental disorder.

95% of gym rats are uncoordinated and unathletic narcissists.
Put them outside to work a real man's shift and they break down in an hour.

It's not absurd. Plenty of normal people can do this. They just dont have the will power. Plenty go overboard, but it's very attainable. Only people who immediately assume mental disorder are likely those regularly making excuses for their own shortcomings.
It's crazy. Living in Louisiana, when I knew someone who did a Marathin or something, we thought it was crazy. Then I moved to The Woodlands where there is a much larger outdoor lifestyle and it's just normal. There is a Marathon and an Ironman race, plus many more shorter, within ten miles of my house. Hundreds of people local to the area do it every year. Are all of them mental? Or are they just determined and surrounded by a good influence. I went from eating, drinking, and being 20 lbs heavier 3 years ago to taking part in these races myself. I have a healthy well balanced life. But this gives me something to strive towards and stay mentally and physically strong.

My hypothesis, we allow mentally deranged people to set the bar that normal people are judged by.
Anyone that puts themself (and family) through that regime isn't achieving, they are trying to fill in a gap somewhere in their life. I always just assumed it was a lack of self-esteem, but it could be something that others aren't privy to

Okay.
Manual labor is a paid workout.
I don't see too many gym rats doing physical labor..what I do see is Jose and Pedro that weigh 120 lbs soaking wet banging out a weedeater for 10 hrs a day.

Hard work and determination, outside of extreme cases. Those who say otherwise are lazy/jealous and are looking to attack those who achieved what they wanted.

The gym is sometimes an outlet for people to escape from other addictions. Lots of recovering alcoholics or drug abusers use the gym as an outlet for that.
Also it’s a way to escape ever starting that lifestyle for some. I’d much rather be addicted to self improvement in the gym than self-destruction outside of it.
The world would be better off if more people’s “problem” was working out too much.
