Help me build a 5.56

I’ve decided the caliber. Now it’s time to build it. I’ve got a $3000 budget for this one. I thought about going the easy route and getting a custom WC with optics, but I think I’d rather something unique. Help me out, baws.

WIth that budget is start with a proof or noveske barrel. Lower doesn’t really matter if you’re going forged. Just get the stamp you want. Gisele trigger. Go Mlok for the handguard. I like th JP silent buffer system. That’s a pretty good starting point IMO. Others may disagree or have other input.

Spend most of that budget on an NX8.
Noveske chrome-lined barrel and Geissele SSA-E are the musts, then whatever else you want
Radian makes a pretty sick lower that is ready to rock in terms of features. SLR MLOK rail

Matched billet receiver set
JP VMOS bolt
BCM Mod 4 charging handle
BCM KMR rail (Keymod 4lyfe)
JP silent capture buffer system
Magpul STR stock
Geissele Trigger
Proof barrel
Glass depends on what you're using the rifle for
This would be over 3K but it would be sick. If I had 3K to spend on a rifle right now I would probably just buy an ADM UIC rifle and throw a Trijicon on there.

Proof barrel, hyperfire trigger, jp silent captured spring, jp match bolt w ultralight carrier, any high quality variable gas block, battle arms mlock rail, Odin works Zulu stock, kns pins, armalite tunable gas block, Vortex razor hd 1-6 scope.
This gun will be middle weight, when tuned will be extremely flat shooting and as accurate as you are capable of shooting.

Knights ambi lower.
Proof barrel probably 18"
Suppressor
US optics B-10 1.8-10x scope.
I see no point in building a $3k 16" or shorter beater rifle.

With that budget I would definitely look into a clean, matching billet receiver set. It’s all personal preference but to me they mate up better for less play between the two, and just make the rifle “feel” nicer if that makes sense. As far as must haves for me, it’s been covered: geissele trigger, JP silent capture spring, nice barrel, SLR M-lok hand guard. If you plan on suppressing it, an adjustable gas block will make for a much more pleasurable experience. I’m pretty sure the guy quit making them, but if you can find a Govnah they are convenient as hell.

What's your budget for optics?
Posted on 8/10/18 at 10:27 am to TigerOnTheMountain
$3000?
I would buy one nice rifle and two or three other not as fancy ones in different configurations. You can get a perfectly serviceable rifle in the $500-$600 range right now. You can get a really nice one for $1,500.

So what's a serviceable $500 model?

An idea, a 2A Armament Balios Lite for 1,931.79 (5lb ultra lite). Get them to swap out the stock BCG for there Ti adjustable BCG for less than $100 (little more weight loss and adjustable if you want). Add in a 22lr upper from them for about another grand and have a nice set.

Proof makes a good barrel, no doubt. But, I wouldn't spend $900 on a barrel for a .223/5.56. You never stated what you wanted to do with your rifle, but the ballistics of the .223/5.56 and nature of the platform just don't justify spending that much on a barrel IMO. Even the top tier custom/semi-custom barrels for .223/5.56 ARs like Shilen, Kreiger, Bartlein, etc. can be had for substantially less than the Proof offerings.
If your goal is to build a super precision rifle I would get a 20-24" barrel with a matched bolt not chambered in 5.56NATO, but in .223Rem or .223 Wylde (shoots .223Rem and 5.56NATO, it's not its own cartridge) from a custom/semi-custom shop in the $400-$500 range that is not chrome lined. I would also get the tools and equipment for hand loading your own consistent rounds as this will be 50% of the equation on how precise your bullets hit. However, if this is your intent you should consider choosing a different AR15 cartridge that shoots a bullet with a better Ballistic Coefficient as it will yield better results as well as increase your range.
If your goal is to build an accurate rifle that is more utility/plinking/"everyday rifle" based to shoot factory ammo I wouldn't spend more than $300-$350 on the barrel as this is where the diminishing marginal utility seems to top out. Meaning spending more isn't necessarily going to yield you more satisfaction with the results for the intended use. Lengthwise I would go 16-18".
Personally, either way I would also allocate some of that money to a silencer, spend a good chunk of it on your optics and, of course, use an aftermarket trigger you like.

Thats right I said it. For a blasting gun you can get quality parts and still buy a couple cases of ammo for $3k.

No doubt. I was just admitting guilt.

FFS $3k for a 5.56!!! Spend $1200 for an incredible 5.56 build and spend the other $1800 on a Grendel or Creedmore distance build.
