I was in the grocery store yesterday browsing amongst the antacids, and this woman and her kid further down the aisle had a chocolate Lab on a leash and harness. It was a beautiful dog and not nearly full grown. I assumed that perhaps one of them had seizures or whatever you have to have to get a service animal. I made a point of not acknowledging the dog because I have heard people with service dogs bitch because someone wants to pet their dog while it is "working".

The dog approaches ME. Leaves the owner and approaches me wagging and looking happy. I am not made of stone...want to pat the dog. The woman yanked the leash and called the dog and it reluctantly returned to her. So was this a service dog that wasn't fully trained, or was this woman just walking her dog in the store?

Have to wonder how much the service animal designation is misused. Maybe I would like to take my Malinois with me everywhere, too...

Thank God. We haven't had a thread on this topic in at least a week.

All someone has to do is put a leash with a vest on a service dog and it can go to the grocery whenever the owner pleases.

We don't know. Perhaps you could have found out and informed us all.

Note: if she's was wearing a Puerto Rico shirt, leave her be.

If it was a pup, than probably still in training, and yes it's important that no one else interracts with it besides who it's designated for and I guess who's training it.

Lady should have been paying more attention.

You have to wonder this?

The percentage is probably close to 9/10.

While that may work, real service dogs have papers showing that they are in fact service dogs.

Some states are cracking down on fake service dogs

quote:

Chris Slavin was in an elevator a couple years ago with Earle, her yellow lab service dog, sitting calmly beside her wheelchair. The elevator doors opened and in walked a woman holding a purse. In the purse was a teacup poodle the color of apricots. The doors closed just as the poodle spotted Earle. That's when the trouble started. In an instant, the poodle leaped from the purse, flung himself at Earle, and clamped his teeth into the bigger dog's snout, leaving Earle bleeding onto the elevator floor. "As soon as this occurred the woman said the poodle was a service dog," said Slavin, who has a severe spinal injury that requires use of the wheelchair. "She then said he wasn't a service dog but an emotional support dog. Finally, she admitted he was a pet she just wanted to bring in the building with her."

quote:

Incidents like that one in Reading, Massachusetts, not far from where Slavin lives in Danvers, have spurred 19 states to enact laws cracking down on people who try to pass off their pets as service animals. The push has been gathering steam in recent years: Virginia implemented its new law in 2016, and Colorado followed suit this year. Massachusetts is now considering a similar proposal

I was at the WW2 museum in NOLA last year and a damn English Bulldog strolled in with a bunch of Mardi Gras beads draped around its neck. The thing wasn't on a leash and not really close to anyone. The guard by the front door said in a loud voice "who's dog is this?" And a lesbian couple immediately let him know that it was their "service dog." What a crock of shite.

All he could do was tell them the dog had to be on a leash.

I saw a report on 20/20 or a show like it a while back that anyone can send off to one of the "service dog" certification places and get a certificate. 90% of these service animals are BS.

I've always wanted to see one of those fake service dogs take a shite in whatever facility. Not because I like to stare at poo, but because I want to see the utter humiliation of its owner. Even if they volunteer to clean it up, they'd have to abandon it (the poo) for a little while, and it'd be just chillin' by itself in the middle of Target. I'd get a kick out of that.

Did she have a legitimate vest on the dog that says please don’t touch?

No -- this dog had on a plain harness with no writing or tags. First time I have seen a probable impostor that wasnt a purse dog. I wouldn't have noticed, but the dog coming to me was unusual.

For anyone who owns a business, emotional support (bullshite) animals are not protected by the ADA.

If someone enters your business with an animal and claims it is for “emotional support” (bullshite), you can refuse them entry.
