240 per year. We have up keep on a couple of areas, cameras, etc. Nobody wants to see your crap in your yard and you can't paint your house turquoise. Works for me. Keeps the trash out.

$180/month seems insanely high.

Ours is $550/year and that covers the pool, tennis court, landscaping/lighting general areas at the entrance of the neighborhood and a few social events a year.

Oh, the postage and envelopes for all the letters they mail out about the two or three annual weeds that pop up every year.

I’ve lived in communities with an HOA for a decade now. Some are terrible (ours is run by a jackass who wants to be everyone’s dad and takes every opportunity to complain about how hard it is to be the president ) but they’re not all bad. Just depends on what you’re looking for in terms of a neighborhood.

Know attorneys that make a great living suing HOAs for all the ridiculous shite they decide to do. None of them will ever live in an HOA.

I don't have one.

Live in a neighborhood that has a lot of older people. Everyone keeps their yard up, if they don't there will be people in my neighborhood who will throw a fit and get aggravate the city councilman and mayor until they take action to get those people to maintain they yard until they either do it on a regular basis or end up moving (there are a few homes that are rentals, but the owner will hear about it a lot of he doesn't make sure they keep their shite up).

Never really understood a HOA when you have city councilmen.

Totally different model

You better drag your neighbors to the meeting.

Most HOAs never have "quorum" at the election meeting, so elections are never actually held, and it's the same jackasses each year over and over.

We have a weird situation. There is a quasi-HOA, they own some land, maintain some signs and flower beds, etc. They charge $50 a year in dues, do a newsletter, etc. Have about 10 pages of restrictive covenants.

However, the developer who build the neighborhood apparently never took the legal steps to get the covenants and the dues added to the land, so, they cannot be legally enforced.

So basically it's a volunteer association that maintains the stuff, and volunteer guidelines that noone has to follow.

Yeah, like the boss of a fast food restaurant.

I don't doubt there is tons of overreach and stupidity in general with HOA's, so I see how a Lawyer would be annoyed with things they know are not legitimate. Luckily I haven't had to deal with that. But I'm definitely not at all against following the rules and covenants I agreed to when purchasing the property and am okay with them being strictly enforced. Ours is run like a local city level government, because it actually is one. Can't complain.

HOA mailbox police came through my neighborhood last month and sent letters to everyone with leaning mailboxes.

Where are you looking?
Ours is $200/year. We just updated the entrance (very nice) and have a playground with new equipment. As far as HOA's go, ours spends money wisely and isn't intrusive without letting trashy shite go unchecked.
ETA: Forgot that also includes fancy poles for all the signage in the neighborhood and upkeep on cameras at both entrances (that I monitor until we move)

$1,100 per year. I pay a little more b/c I have a lot and a half.

Gated community so covers electric gates, roads, signage, gas street lights, pond, walking paths, baseball field, fire pits, dog park, fountains, common area landscaping, etc.

I got in a huge fight with a few pricks on the architectural review committee over our plans to put in our pool. Ultimately the attorney on the HOA board told them they were out of line, and I got my pool. All of said pricks have moved away. MAGA!

Most OT boats are too big for a trailer anyway

Ours is 150 per quarter. It pays for the neighborhood pool maintenance, electricity, water, and liability insurance. Also pays for entry gate maintenance, landscaping, grass cutting of common areas, etc. Small neighborhood with only 54 lots.

How 'bout a boat storage unit? For a board that acts like ballers when it comes to something like tipping percentages, you sure whine like mofo's about paying for a spot to park the boat you likely financed with the last dime of your paycheck.
