Any suggestions for a better experience?
Find a plan like Couch 2 5K and pick a target race. It’s a great sense of accomplishment.
Put in 14.5 this AM. Average HR was 143. Paced it at 10:30/mile. Worked a mile or two in there at race pace 7:50/mile. Nice easy recovery run on a beautiful Saturday AM in Bham.

13.25 this morning here. Good weather & not too hot. Set out to do 8, but I just felt good today so decided to push it another 5+ miles. Have a newborn at home so gotta get these long runs in whenever I can!

I finished 11th out of 424 in a community 5k this morning. Holy crap.

That’s awesome. What was your time?

Must have been a slow field I guess. Only 2 people under 20 minutes.
Still happy with the placement though lol.

Top three finishers in my race were from the same family. #1 overall was a twelve year old, #1 overall female was an eleven year old. Dad took second and just happened to be in my age group.

Its been so long since Ive emptied the gas tank in the speed department, so I figured I would this morning.
5mi race in Shreveport, 65 degrees and more humid than i anticipated.
36 and some change, 7:18 pace, 2nd AG, 14/154.
A far cry from the long trails I have been focusing on over the past year. Felt so good to blow it out.

Thinking about taking the plunge and signing up for my first marathon in December

You've convinced me.
I'm signing up tonight.
Heading back east to Kiawah. Nice little off-season vacation.

I need to sign up for my 50 miler so I'll actually train for it

I need to sign up for one as well but I don't really want to run one around BR. Any ideas for a good first marathon within a few hour drive?

Biloxi, MS?
That marathon is in December.

I really enjoy the LA marathon, it’s a great course. I ran Biloxi, it’s a point to point that is 99% flat until the overpass at the end. Some pretty bad headwinds to deal with also. Overall I preferred LA much more.
A lot depends on your timetable...when are you looking to race?

The problem is most of it is the same loop I do my long run on. I want something new to look at. As for timetable, really anything once the heat of summer cools off, late fall to winter.

Wind is almost always out of the east (in some manner) on the MS Coast. The marathon runs right into the wind.

Ok, not sure how far you want to drive, but just a few in the south east during that time:
Tupelo: Labor Day weekend. It’s an out and back that starts at 5am. It’s a cult favorite
Rocket City: in Huntsville in December. Incredibly well organized race.
St Judes: big race in Memphis. Have heard really good things
Mobile is in January I think. Have heard mixed reviews.
These are just some I’ve done or kept an eye on

Running a marathon in Tupelo on Labor Day weekend sounds miserably hot.

6.5 this AM at a 9:05 pace with an average HR of 161. Temp was 80 with a humidity right at 99%. It was miserable out there. Emptied my entire water bottle on my head over the course.
Summer is here in Alabama I’m afraid.
