Nothing's dead. Dallas is just delusional. Just like Chicago was last year. Pels talked to them about Niko before the season started. Before the punch. But Chicago thought they might be good. Flash forward to a few months later and they took a lesser offer than what Dell would have given in a sign and trade earlier.
Teams are delusional ones. The okay and below average ones think they will be good. The bad ones think they might be okay and might be players the following summer in free agency. It is so hard to get teams to admit to themselves that they are sellers right now. They don't face reality for a few months. It's unlikely because of their delusion.

They are exploring several paths. Obviously. The TPE option is completely dependent on the other team saying yes. That is not in Dell's control.
Clark is being talked to. Lawson is a possibility. Barea or Yogi Ferrell makes a lot of sense if Dallas doesn't want one of them to get the ball in Luka's hands. Jamal Crawford and Jarrett Jack are possibilities. Ideally, they get a guy or for a year as insurance. They want to give Payton, and to a lesser extent Jackson, every chance to really take minutes. But an insurance policy is necessary in case they fail
