Complete crab story mode that barely has any actual tennis matches filled to the brim with incredibly frustrating time-based minigames and "boss battles."

Class-based characters, some of whom are incredibly unbalanced.

Game relies on overly gimmicky BS like zone shots, slowing down time, and racket breaking.

Rather than being a simple pick up and play arcade tennis game with Mario characters, this game is about the farthest thing from a pick up and play game that I can think of.

I was expecting Virtua Tennis with Mario characters. What I got barely resembles Tennis in the slightest

I think you mean Mario power tennis on GC. Power shots off. So many epic rallies which usually end with a rapid fire volley at the net and someone taking a ball to the face.

The game never advertised itself as that. I'm sorry you failed to research the game or read reviews before buying it.

It's actually reviewing pretty well, so it's far from terrible. You're just salty because you fricked up and thought it was something it never tried to be.

The game has a 77% Metacritic score. which is not "great." Stil, I wouldn't put stock in critic scores. What matters is audience opinion. I really can't see all but the most hardcore players still playing this after the new wears off. The gameplay mechanics are not approachable enough for just anyone, and the single player is pretty barebones.

I mean it’s Mario Tennis. Mario Kart isn’t just plain racing either

That's somewhat of a poor comparison. Mario Kart is its own genre. I don't know how to describe Mario Tennis without calling it an arcade Tennis game.

If Mario Aces didn’t have all that bullshite in, what would separate it from being just a regular tennis game with Mario character skins?

In that case, y’all would be crying out “this is nothing but a cash grab tennis game with a Mario coat of paint.”

See how that works? This game is definitely more like Splatoon and online focused shooters with poorly developed campaigns and a lot of online support. Mario Aces was never meant to be a regular tennis game and didn’t advertise itself as such. You just didn’t take the time to look into the game like a poster said above.

While I would love a Golf Story style single player, im fine with just vs cpu or various cups. Problem is, theres only 4. No real customization options or unlocks.

Then I think the components like racket breaking and zone shots ruin the competitive aspect.

This applies to any Mario game that isn't a Mario Bros.

I wouldn't have a problem with this if there were more room for error/control in general controls. You can hold the stick all the way in any direction and you will never hit it out of bounds. The only possibility for an out of bounds play is a really bad return due to a misaligned/mistimed power shot or aiming out of bounds on zone shots and specials.

The skill cap is low due to this, which is not the case for Mario Tennis 64. You could serve out of bounds easily in that game.

I like the game as a quick diversion, maybe as something to play local coop, but nothing more. There is little competitive strategy to matter. I'm slightly disappointed.

I've been playing it and enjoying it. It's not the greatest game but it's not terrible by any means

Literally lost every set to the AI but won the match because I focused on nothing but special shots and breaking his racket. Game is fundamentally flawed

I just beat the campaign and have enjoyed the game alright...

But I'm a huge tennis fan and this game just makes me want a virtua tennis on switch more than actually want to play Mario tennis :sigh:

I mean it's an ok diversion: but I would rather be playing octopath traveler or the Splatoon expansion more now: I might end up selling mta back to best buy to get some money for a new game

I'm not really a tennis fan but I love playing some of the video games.

It's a shame too because it looks great and feels good to play.

Yup. The controls feel pretty tight. I just wish there was more skill involved. They went further along the easy path than Kart. Super disappointing because their most popular Multiplayer game, Splatoon, has a pretty high skill cap. And the game is popular for that reason.

Bad form on this one.

They could fix it by making a mode that has none of the specials, but who knows if they will
