doesn't the tournament mode (online) have a non specials/zone shot type of mode?

I got it on Friday and have been playing it. I just got to the Bowser fight at the end of the adventure mode and have been enjoyin that pretty well. I think it's nearly required for practicing and realizing how integral learning to block and using trick shots is going to be in playing online mode.

I think it's pretty fun, but is going to be frustrating to play online because of the skill required, imo.

I know I keep harping on this, but it sort of ticks me off

I think it's deceptive. It's one thing to have skill in button presses and timing, it's another thing to have skill in actual tennis gameplay. It has the former but no the latter.

Rather than working your opponent into a disadvantageous position on the court using tennis skill, all that matters is if you block correctly, manage meter, and trick shot correctly. Not the kind of game I wanted honestly.

Not every game is for everyone, and maybe it's a good thing because Octopath is coming out, but I'm actually more disappointed after sinking some time into it. And I bought digital, blah.

Yeah I feel ya. It's like wanting Madden and getting NFL Blitz

It's definitely an arcade game and not a sim, so if you want a sim I can see where this would be really disappointing. I wanted something that reminded me of "Tennis" from the original NES and this is a great updated version of something simple like that.

I disagree here as well. Mario Tennis 64 was not a sim, but had a lot of strategy to it. It was the perfect blend, and that's why it is so well regarded. In fact, many of Nintendo's mid-life sports games - Strikers, Golf, Tennis - gave people the perfect blend of skill vs. fun.

As does Splatoon, and Arms. But Aces does not.

Honestly, I don't see the fun in a great sequence nulled by a trick shot.

Call me stupid but I figured it would be closer to the previous versions of Mario Tennis which were a cross between an RPG and tennis, as you would play to unlock characters and level them up.

Hence why I bought Golf Story, which effectively took up where Mario Golf left off.

We wanted to buy this last night but man a lot of shtt going on. For the SO and I to casual play it seems a little ridiculous. Everything looks like a special.
