oh I completely agree. But in the case of Williams, Spade, or Bourdain, I wonder if anything could be done to help them? They certainly had the means to get help. They had lots of people around them to turn to. So maybe- just maybe- they were hell bent on self destruction and it was unavoidable. No reason to feel guilt over that. Remorse, sure. But not responsibility for their actions.

Now with a case like Adam Lanza where his mother couldn't get him institutionalized, yes there is blame to be assigned.

But short of institutionalizing the mentally ill, what can one do if the ill really want to hurt themselves?

Are you saying a more crowded environment leads to more depression? Cause I would agree.

Now, if you're saying the rate of suicide is because we have more people, I'd disagree.

The rate of suicide is whats increasing.

Some people definitely need them. I do believe they are overprescribed however. Coping skills are decreasing, people want a magic pill and they get it.

years ago we didn't take it seriously and suicides were nowhere near the level they are at today. We now take it a lot more seriously and we have an epidemic of suicides. So I guess we have a lot more mental illness now? If so, then the question to be answered is why do we have more mental illness now than in the past?

Good post.

While mental illness is serious business and we should, as a society, offer any means necessary to support these individuals , it is ultimately up to the individual to not only seek it but see the benefit.

Suicide is an extremely selfish act. Look at this past week. The whole country is standing up saying something must be done. But what? All the resources in the world cannot prevent an individual instance of this from happening.

We live in a time where it’s is very easy to just exist. Food and shelter are basically rights in developed countries. That leaves a ton of room for reflection of self worth, and the mind can turn on itself.

I know this isn’t a popular opinion but I don’t care. This is ultimately nobody’s fault but the person who committed the act. We want to only see the victim but not the person that committed the act. We tend to ignore that the person knew the impact that commuting the act would cause, and at times can be the driving force for doing it.

They absolutely saved mine. Not necessarily from death, but from spiraling out. And therapy helped put me in a place where I didn’t need them anymore.

The shite that anti depressants get is for the people who use them like a wonder drug and don’t do anything else to help pick themselves back up.

Lexapro gave me a push to be able to take control of my life again. Therapy is what enabled me to keep going without the need for a push. Haven’t needed either in 5+ years.

For most cases, therapy should be prescribed first to determine if medicine is truly needed.

Sadly with prescription kick backs doctors get, they’re all too eager to just write it.

amen. I think the hate the pharma companies and doctors get for prescribing antidepressants is unwarranted. If the patient follows the protocol, things should be OK. But patient compliance is a bitch to maintain. CAnt blame big pharma when the patient doesn't medicate as instructed.

Its horrible but so is the attitudes towards it. I’ve experienced suicide with some close family members and friends. Gut wrenching when it happens but I don’t blame them for anything. Incredibly sad but we have no idea what they are going through internally and therapy isn’t always the answer.

When I quit drinking they gave me some to stabilize things. It took a whole lot of self reflection and a "get straight at all cost" mentality to work through it. I was extremely depressed at the time.

Changing everything about my life actually pulled me out of it. The meds just left me numb and unfeeling.

Yeah this is what I meant. The meds just helped me to do that.

I went through 3 different ones to find one that helped and didn’t do this. I was perfectly fine on lexapro, but other ones made me numb, one killed libido too.

After a few years though, lexapro was just something I took everyday so I got with my doctor and tapered off.

I quit even trying them, side effects were worse than the depression. It works for some people which is great and maybe I just haven’t found the right one, but I’ll never go on them again. Too fearful of the side effects the ones he kept giving me had.

I would like to see suicide numbers coinciding with the rise of social media.

OK, what do you want us to do about it?

I think a good start would be to push awareness to the schools. Teach kids its ok to seek out help if they need it, teach them signs of depression so they can look for it in themselves and others. It wouldn't fix everything, but I think it would be a good start.

Celebrities telling of their battles with depression/mental illness always helps too.

I honestly believe there are more people who suffer from mental illness today because there are more people, than ever, whose mother was taking some type of substance that affected the child's development, while the mother was pregnant.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that is a factor in everyone who commits suicide, it might not be a factor in the majority of suicides, but I think it contributes to the total number of suicides.

I think this also plays a factor in some of these kids we see, shooting up schools, etc.

Even going back to when I was in HS. In the 90s... And all the people in school who did acid and ecstasy, and some of them getting pregnant soon after graduating.. Do we really know what type of affect those type of drugs would have on a developing fetus?
