No, so everything is perfect, right?

No, but that still doesn't mean it's being taken seriously enough.

Suicide is now becoming as glamorized as mass shootings. We live in sad times.

You nailed it, honestly.

My wife is a psychiatrist, so I hear too much doom and gloom daily

People with ALS, Parkinson's, and brain cancer must be weak minded, too.

What an ignorant statement.

Okay, so you want to play stupid today.

I wouldn't wish ALS on no one. You literally are trapped in your body. However, most do not consider that a mental disease. They try to use the dementia symptom to tie into mental illness.

quote:

ost experts believe that ALS does not affect a person’s mental processes. In most people, neither cognitive processes (such as thinking, learning, memory, and speech) nor behavior is affected. Occasionally, however, a person with ALS does experience profound mental changes, which are called dementia. Dementia is a severe brain disorder that interferes with a person’s ability to carry out everyday activities.

Here read.

After Robin Williams death it came out he was highly depressed. Just the opposite of his public image. So happy go lucky guy/gal could easily be sad depressed individual behind closed doors.

Social media

I honestly think this plays a factor.. Especially in younger people. Was talking with a friend awhile back. He has a son in his pre-teens. He was saying that people say "the kids are just weak today.. blah blah blah", but before social media. Kids go to school, something happens, they go home, then when they went back to school it might follow them until something else happened to someone well.. But today, it constantly follows them.

And once kids latch on to something, they can get pretty cruel.. So something happens that is embarrassing to a kid. It's all day at school. Then from there it doesn't end. They all are communicating with each other on social media.. It's where they hang out and it's ongoing. And you get a group of kids... Once one starts with something, the rest follow and it only snowballs from there.

I never really looked at it that way until he mentioned it and looking at it from that view point I can understand why these kids are more driven to suicide. And when I say I understand, I don't mean it as if it's something I support or anything.. There needs to be away to address this, but also.. I am sure drug addiction plays a role for many people.. and mental illness... Mental illness can be hereditary right? But is there anything that can cause someone to have mental illness? (other than experiences that cause PTSD).

The rising rate of suicide is alarming of course.

Suicide rates increased by 25% over the past couple of decades.

years ago we didn't take it seriously and suicides were nowhere near the level they are at today. We now take it a lot more seriously and we have an epidemic of suicides.

So I guess we have a lot more mental illness now?

If so, then the question to be answered is why do we have more mental illness now than in the past?

I don't know if he is right or wrong, but you can make an argument, especially amongst younger people.

The more they hear of others doing it, the easier they can justify doing it. I don't see how that is a stretch?

My point being was that just because someone appears happy and go lucky all the time doesnt mean that their not suicidal.

It’s true though.

I posted on fb a very brief post to let my friends and family on fb know what had happened to my father. Between everything going on....it was easier to put it on fb instead of contacting everyone. My father knew about the post and was fine with it. In fact I found out one of my fb friends has a lot of contacts with the behavioral health system in PHX and she offered her help if I needed it.

I got a call after my post from a family member mad at me cause of my post. They didn’t like me airing the family secrets.

And you know what....that really pissed me off. If my dad had a heart attack and I posted from the hospital ....no one would care.

He does what he did....a cry for help....and I’m expected to keep it hush and hush. Heaven forbid others know my father is ill.

Found this most interesting. I can see the reasons behind suicide and OD rising deaths. Wonder why Alzheimers is rising? What had changed to make it rise?

Could just be that people are living longer and overcoming other diseases at a greater rate.

And we closed a lot of mental institutions. We need to bring them back.
