More than a decade of steadily rising rates have made suicide the nation’s 10th leading cause of death and one of only three causes of death — including Alzheimer’s disease and drug overdoses — that are increasing in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In releasing the report — the same week fashion designer Kate Spade was found dead by suicide — CDC officials noted that more than half of those who died by suicide — 54 percent — did not have a known diagnosed mental health condition. A new study on suicide trends in 27 states found that many victims acted after relationship problems or loss; substance misuse; physical health problems; or job, money, legal or housing stress.

Suicide trends/rates seem to come in waves correct? I remember reading it rarely stays stagnant for a period of time, it goes up for a decade or so and then trends down for a decade or so

Mental illness is no joke. We really need to take it more seriously as a country.

Did Anthony Bourdain push us into the top 10?

TBH, the world needs a culling of weak minded individuals.

If Kate Spade had been diagnosed with breast cancer and sought treatment....the public would view her as brave and be sympathetic.
Instead she suffered from depression and didn’t seek treatment cause she was scared how society would view that.
Until people view mental illness the same as we view other physical illnesses, we will never be able to take it as seriously as it needs to be.
ETA: the post above me shows we have a long way to go

I know this sounds ridiculous, but the NBA actually is doing a pretty good job on this front.
They've got Kevin Love and DeMar DeRozan in national TV ads saying they suffered from mental illnesses and sought help. That takes some balls.

Drugs, social alienation, overuse of antidepressants, social media marginalizing people, constant media negativity, bad parenting, lack of family support etc. America is WAY past being a little rough around the edges . There are more and more people who just feel agitated and alone in this brutal world.

OK, what do you want us to do about it?

People can’t “see” mental illness like they can physical ailments
People are inherently stubborn/afraid of what they can’t make tangible hard proof
A mere couple of centuries ago we burned people in this country calling them witches due to this

Do you think there was a time in this country when we took mental illness more seriously than today?

People with ALS, Parkinson's, and brain cancer must be weak minded, too.
What an ignorant statement.

As other causes of death are cured or reduced by modern medicine, suicide will necessarily rise up the list.
The rising rate of suicide is alarming of course.

Society doesn't frown on treatment of depression.

If you are in the public eye like she was and are known as a very cheerful person....can you not see why she would be scared?
Her fortune was based off her being this fun energetic designer.

I wish I got paid for that study.
