For people not familiar with Blind lingo, the equity award (RSUs) usually vests over 4 years. For example of you get a 200K equity grant when you join, it means 50K of RSUs vest every year over a 4 year period. But you also get stock refreshes every year as part of your annual performance review, so that 3rd and 4th year Total Compensation (TC) can get very high if you stick around for 4 years. No wonder the Bay Area home prices are what they are.

ETA: This one is my favorite. This guy is just 8 months out of college and into his professional career and he is complaining about his yearly compensation being 'only' $185K.

For the Facebook offer, the base pay is decent but adjusting for cost of living you could get a similar gig in a city like Houston or Dallas. The $220k offer is worth about $125k in Houston. Though that sign in bonus and stock award is pretty darn good. I've never seen anything close to that in my 10 years in Houston. Salary alone wouldn't get me to move but that benefit package looks damn good.

The stupidity of this thread.

Do you have any idea what it costs to live in SF?

I say this because my 31 year old sister lives there and makes great money...for anywhere other than SF. She's slightly above average there.

It’s amazing what $300k a year gets you in LA versus NYC, LA, or the Bay.

You’re practically lower upper class here and lower middle class there.

"$250k/year with a $100k sign-on bonus. $1 million bonus to invest for retirement. Access to VIP gym on office floor with 1 hour required meetings each morning with personal trainer. 24/7 food cart delivery service directly to cubicle space. Swipe card with 100 preloaded coins to access sleeping quarters. Opportunity to earn Facebook pucks for DDR room access after 3 positive evaluations. 5 year contract commitment before being granted contact with biological family. Prerequisite: silver-chip eyeware hard drive installed through left temple at time of signing. Should I negotiate for immediate DDR room access?"

It's all relative. I've been offered 300k jobs for what I do in the Bay area. And after doing the math, I'd take a quality of life/cost of living cut compared to what I'm making here in Cola.

I feel bad for people who are mad at others who are more successful than they are.

The 8 months experience complaining about $185k does sound ridiculous imo. I guess it's relative to cost of living but still. Fwiw those salaries are much higher than southern California salaries

Here's a back yard of a $1.5MM house in SF that I randomly pulled up on zillow

Yeah, they can keep their $200-300k

Base salaries are on par or slightly low for oil field engineering managers, but those cash/stock offers are way more than LA/TX.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned in business is that people are cheap. These are highly successful companies because they get the best employees by overpaying for them. In the grand scheme of profits, it’s pennies.

Companies that nickel and dime their employees typically are always struggling to survive. Over pay for people. It’s not a big expense. I just hired a stud engineer by offering him around $20k more than the going rate. In the grand scheme of things, what’s 20k?
