Technically, it's in Varnado not Bogalusa. As a teenager, I got to meet Kansas who stayed at the Sportsman Inn where my Mom was a desk clerk. I also remember Stevie Wonder giving a concert while he recorded there as well.

My hometown of New Llano, LA, was the largest, the most recent and the most successful Socialist Colony to exist in the USA.

To date, the 10th leading scorer in the NBA, was from mine.

Eta: Also Timmy Smith grew up in the area until he knew his dad's name was Tug

What are the chances five guys from the area were all captured on the Bataan peninsula AND survived the death march, plus the next 4-1/2 years as slave laborers?
One of my kid’s grandfather-in-law IS a Bataan Death March survivor.

Born in March of 1920, and yes he’s 98 years-old.

He was sent to work as slave labor in a Japanese copper mine on the West Coast of Japan from the Summer of ‘42 to August of ‘45.

Not to nit-pick but they were POWs from March of ‘42 to August of ‘45, a bit less than 3 1/2 years, not 4 1/2 years.

I have learned from researching Tigerdroppings that my hometown of Lafayette boasts the largest collection of Affliction shirts in the world.

My home town once had a war college called "Louisiana State Seminary of Learning & Military Academy"....the war college later moved to Baton Rouge and was renamed LSU.

The first attempted hijacking of a plane is the US occurred in Chicot County, California. The would be hijacker pulled a gun when asked for a ticket and said "here's my ticket" and demanded to be flown to Smackover, Ar.

And Smackover is the city with the most people in the college football HOF per capita with 2 and a population of 1763...Clyde "Smackover" Scott and Coach Wayne Hardin. Bill Belichick credits Hardin with influencing his desire to coach and approach to coaching as his dad was an assistant under Hardin at the US Naval Academy.

You know what really sucks? I did the math in my head before I typed it. I knew the garrisons held out for a while after Pearl Harbor. I seem to remember Dugout Doug bailing out of Corregidor for Australia around Christmas, 1941 and the garrisons surrendering in early 1942. I knew hostilities (for the most part) in the Pacific Theater ended in August, 1945. (I believe the formal surrender was signed in September.) But you are correct, I fricked up the math.

That's great that your kid's grandfather has lived such a long life after such terrible deprivation. Same as Louis Zamperini. It's amazing that their lives weren't greatly shortened from malnutrition and mistreatment. You'd think time spent as slave labor would age a guy worse than dog years.

The five Bataan vets from Bogalusa is crazy to me. It's not a big place. I bet they don't have 15,000 people living there now. The population might have been larger in the '30s and '40s. There was a huge lumber industry up there, but I can't imagine it ever being over 30,000 or so.

The odd history is the only thing known about my town.

1. You can “eat where it all began” at the birthplace of KFC.

2. I think we now have the only reoccurring moonbow left. Go Cumberland falls!

I used to spend a lot of time in your town. Have some great pics of the falls in the snow.

My hometown was a forest owned by a lumber company as recently as the 1960s.
