The answers are Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan. Both are still immensely popular in the most densely populated areas of the world. Current players probably Steph Curry he's one of the biggest names in Asia.
These are outside of the soccer stars, of course.

You disagree?
Outside of soccer, LeBron is probably the most popular and well known athlete. People around the world LOVE basketball - especially in Asia. Shoot even Stephon Marbury was a hero in that part of the world. I guess the debate is popular vs. well known. People like Federer, Tiger Woods, etc. are extremely well known - but I think more people like basketball than those other sports.

Neymar is the third most famous athlete in the world hands down. Soccer is so much bigger globally than basketball. In fact, I would say the only athletes who even comes close to the fame of the top soccer players are LeBron, Usain Bolt and Tiger Woods.

Usain Bolt is a good shout.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Usain Bolt
He has the distinction of being the fastest human in the world. As popular as soccer is around the world, not every single person watches it. So they don’t care who’s the best, highest payed, etc. athlete. Meanwhile pretty much everyone finds it interesting who’s the fastest person ever.
