Why do American houses always look like shacks built by a 10 year old... No wonder they turn to rubble when you get some bad weather.

First at 23 (technically inheritance), in the process of closing on the second now at 25 (will be primary residence), & will be in the hunt for a third in the coming months. I'll likely sell the first in the coming year & flip the profits into a third & fourth. Trying to build that real estate portfolio

22 On my 3rd.
I have a neighbor a few houses away who for 25 years would buy a crappy house and fix it up and rent it out. He started in college. He has 31 rental houses now.
He has since turned it over to a real estate property manager and all he does now if cash checks.

Am vaguely in the market at 26. Not making any real moves, but learning a little bit about the process and trying to be patient. Just started a career, same with the GF (no pics). Would like to buy one by a year from now, no later than about 2-2.5 years from now.

Bought first and only at 26 (Currently 35) in May 2006.
Put Zero Down, paid for closing. Financed the rest. Market crashed shortly after. Due to area that I lived we didnt lose value hardly at all.
Unfortunately we flooded. I don't even want to know how much value we lost. The insurance paid for lots of upgrades in the house, so maybe that counters some of the lost value? not sure as we have no plans to leave at this point until kids are out.

I’ve owned three times. I prefer renting as I felt stuck once buying a house not to mention all the money thrown away on closing costs, property taxes, interest, real estate fees, home repairs, insurance, and PMI, and HOA fees.
I prefer location as well and it’s just a lot more affordable to rent something downtown right by work than live out in the burbs and spend 2-3 hours of my day in a car.

Bought first at around age 28, interest rate was around 14%. including the one I live in now have owned 8 because of having to move around, and a divorce and remarriage. Lost my shirt on sale of two of them, due to having to sell in a recession. Real estate is not a fool proof investment, I would have been much better off renting instead of buying several times.

How old were you when you bought your first house?
quote:7, but we've only lived in two of them. The other 5 were either vacation or long holiday weekend lake houses (@Lake Rosemound) or houses that we gave to our kids.
How many have you owned?

29, built it. Built my 4th (and last) 2 years ago.
I still own one paid off house in addition to that, but at my age if you haven't paid off at least one you're doing it wrong.
