You posted a woe is me topic about how hard your job is wiping snot off kids noses and teaching them how to FOIL.
I posted about teacher salaries and how unfair they are, you have a hard on against teachers, that has been evident by previous threads though.
quote:Where? I've answered everything honestly, sorry you see it a certain way
Then you answer every question about how awful and mistreated you are,
quote:Again link? because based on your previous input on anything teacher related you seem awfully interested and perturbed by the subject
you are bitching like a 12 year old school girl that Johnny doesn't want to go to the dance with that you have to chaperone.

teaching is a pretty fair deal, all things considered.
it's pretty great if the teacher's spouse is an engineer, accountant, lawyer, etc.

How is it unfair?
Yeah I would like to see all of you ok with this, but many expect teachers to be ok with this because "they knew what they were getting into"

You’re a good guy. Ascension Parish is fortunate to have you.

Did you not talk to teachers when you were doing in class hours for your certificate? I think one of the first questions would be is, "What are the pros and cons that you deal with as a teacher?"

No. It would be unfair if your skills were worth more and you were locked in at an employer who wouldn’t give you compensation commensurate with your abilities.
But you are free to walk at any time if you think there is a more equitable deal. There isn’t, because teachers are paid in line with how society values them.

So you have a thread of people admitting that teachers don't get paid much, but will bitch that our education system sucks. Not only that, but encouraging potentially a good teacher to leave the profession rather than admit we should do more to attract better talent.

No, teachers just bitch about making the median US salary while getting 2x-3x more time off than the average worker. I would never want to be a teacher, I think they are underpaid, but it's not like that is an economics issue. I would feel bad for someone that entered into the workforce with realistic expectations to make x, but for economic reasons they make y while doing the same amount of work. That is out of their control. You chose to be a teacher knowing (or should know) almost exactly what you would be paid. You pay almost no insurance cost, don't pay SS and get an 80% pension. You are fairly compensated for the demand of your job and the supply of teachers. If it weren't easy 100 people wouldn't be lined up for the same job.
My sister is a teacher at school full of Mexican kids. There are 30 of them, they can't read or write, they don't try, they show up half the time, but they are all outpacing comparable students by a wide margin. She works MAYBE 45 hours a week and gets June into August off. Of course she complains about her job sometimes, as every one does, but she realizes she has a pretty decent gig.

Hell, I haven't said anything negative about my job outside of what many of you have interpreted. Do I think teachers are underpaid? In certain parishes, yes.... do I hate my job, no I love my job.
In fact, I've been an advocate of making it harder to become a teacher for a while now on here and through other avenues.

I pay 150 a month to retirement
Okay, so you pay 1800.00 per year towards retirement? Wow!!!
quote:
my parish pays nothing
Hmmmm, I don't believe that, unless you are being clever by specifying "My Parrish"?
quote:
so someone single with the lowest paid insurance 150-175 a month
Pretty damn good. I'm sure there is a dollar value to that vs a lot of private sector employee's benefits.

I would make 80% of my last 3 years of salary
So let's say you end up making 50K a year for your last three years. I'm sure it will be more.
You would get 40,000.00 per year. You would have only put in 54,000 total over your career at 150.00 month (Based on 30 years).
If I put in 1800.00 a year my company would only match the 1800.00 per year. I would end up with 108,000.00 over a comparable 30 years plus 401K earnings in the market if the market didn't tank. Based on 40K per year you will earn in retirement, my retirement would last for maybe 3 years.
You really should just enjoy working 50-60 hours a week. You are basically making 80-90K per year, but 40-50K is deferred till retirement. You will earn more than by the end of your career.

Do you think this is mutually exclusive to teaching? I've had three people leave my 15 or so person group in the last 6 months, but we are producing at the same rate. I don't bitch about it like a whiny school girl, I see it as opportunity to make an impression and move up faster.
Posted on 4/27/18 at 10:55 pm to tduecen
That's good man.
Again I wasn't trying to be a dick, and I know you didn't intend to come off as whining.
If you want some more cash, look around. If you enjoy what you do, it shouldn't be about the money.
Don't let anyone think less of you because of tangible things in life.
I'm sure you're a great guy and you have people that love you for you.
Most of us see these threads and see it as bitching. Can't fault us for that.

Some. Now that he has shared more about his retirement, I am saying teachers make a better income than he is realizing or admitting. I would suggest the education sucks for a lot of reasons and not all because of teachers. I would put blame on administrations, unions, parents, society, politics, etc.

This is so underestimated by younger people comparing salaries.
Private companies have all but cut out pensions, only public ones keep it due to politicians unwilling to commit political suicide by ending them.
I don't want to hear about how little any government worker gets paid.
