There's a universal thought that Gentry has done enough to earn another year

Surely, I have to agree with that. But, but, but...Monty Williams..??
Seriously though, if you simply look at progressions alone, it still does not make much sense that Monty Williams was fired, especially when we're going to keep Gentry around.
It was a completely different team just a few years ago. AD was not the broad, versatile player like he is now. But, the Spurs build was working.
Much like this season after Boogie went down, in '14-15, MW had to pull a rabbit out the hat and make the playoffs to keep his job. That was universally known. He did that then he was fired after being swept by the NBA Champion Warriors.
#NeverForgetMonty
In all seriousness, I'm a huge fan. When Gentry's offense is running up and down on all cylinders, it's fricking exciting. We got to see a lot of that down the stretch this season.
BEAT the SPURS!!!

Everyone knows I'm a Gentry hater, but yes, he has earned himself another year. The staff did a great job for the most part.

I feel like Gentry is a decent coach, just not very versatile. Give him a roster that fits his scheme and he'll be okay. Make him play Omer Asik, and he's going to look like an idiot.

The level we were playing at right before boogie getting at was some of the best Pelicans ball I've seen in years.
Add the fact that we tied our longest win streak ever after him going down, and still having us in a place to get a possible first round home series is very impressive.

Monty shouldn't have been fired. We were improving every year, and beating the Spurs was huge. In hindsight, nobody knew the Warriors were really that good.
If he didn't blow that 20 point lead in the 4th, he probably keeps his job.

also...
they do not make the playoffs without the mirotic trade and the okafor signings. rondo & clark have been major contributors. miller has been a roller coaster, but he's been better than we expected. asik is finally gone. we have our 2nd round pick back
demps did a good job with what few options he had

He sure did. He was after Mirotic before Boogie went down, but yeah, that was a great move. Right place, right time with Okafor.
Demps became unchained after Monty left. I know Ferry gets some credit, but he's been pulling deals left and right since Monty was fired.

I think that's going to happen to any coach.

He’s done enough for another year plus it seems like the players really like him.
Last thing we need to do is anything that would piss off AD.

the mirotic trade isn’t looking all that great from CHI side as well...they traded an expiring 2019 contract who can actually play for an expiring 2019 contract who can’t play, and a 2nd round pick for a late round 1st

I'm on board with continuity and will get behind any praise for the Pelicans and what they were able to accomplish this season. The front office, coaching staff, players and the rest of the organization deserve credit.
Let's be clear about one thing, though. We, as fans, teammates, coaches, front office, and the entire organization asked AD to deliver 30 pts 15 Rebs and all the ancillary actions required to win, and he delivered. The man can not be praised enough for his play. The only player doing as much for his team since the all-star break is Lebron James. I love Jrue Holiday, and the rest of the guys are easy to root for but without AD this team falls off a cliff the size of Mt. Everest. Look at what happened when he missed a couple games. Look at what happened when he was 60/75%. AD is doing it all and deserves all the credit in the world.

Lets not repeat the mistakes of our past. Monte should have been retained, and now Gentry should be retained. We need continuity.

The offense is about 100x better than the Monty years. D remained respectable too. That's why Gentry is better.

I'm crediting the offense to Chris Finch.
Gentry blows.

Monty had nearly a fully healthy roster minus a minutes restricted Jrue by seasons end.
Gentry has not. He had to pull it together after an all nba player went down.
Comparison is stupid.
PTM can credit Finch but who brought Finch in? Erman? Gentry’s willingness and desire to bring in top level assistants is what sets him apart from Monty.

quote:Cousins going down opened up the offense to play how Finch wants the team to play. Gentry had this team before Boogie, and they blew. With Boogie they weren't much better. Without Boogie and with Finch running the offense, they're better.

And the team also decided to stop blowing games in the second half and play a full 48 minutes.
