Nearly two decades ago, I had a NASA co-worker from suburban Chicago, who liked college football. We became friends and talked politics on occasion. I went up to West Lafayette to watch his fellow alumnus, a kid named Drew Brees, beat IU to make the Rose Bowl. He and I also watched LSU beat Tennessee in overtime as fans rushed the field.

His politics were somewhere between "typical Chicago" and "typical Indiana" and thus he was hard to pin down. He would have voted for Bill Clinton in a heartbeat, and probably even got lulled into the persona that was created as Barack Obama too. But he was at heart, a conservative democrat.

I was able to get him to see so many things about conservatism that made sense. And I changed a lot of his preconceived notions about the South. He honestly believed that the sight of a "Rebel Flag" simply meant the person was a racist. He said all of his friends and family back home believed that. I changed his mind.

And then, at a tailgate with my father in law... the N-word was uttered countless times. And most of the progress I had made was lost. The Purdue engineer was not gonna be voting my way any time soon.

When some of you folks go too far in your attacks on Mrs. Obama... and I mean some truly cringe-worthy statements, some statements that are either racist, borderline racist, or COULD BE EASILY interpreted as such, you are isolating the middle and PUSHING THEM AWAY from the ideals of conservative (and libertarian) thought that I strongly believe are the key to our success as a nation.

And, more specifically, you are wrong to do so.

Despite the justifications that can be made about the MSM treating her like a perfect queen, a fashion goddess, an elegant woman.. and to criticize that bias is fair... but by calling her a man, or ugly, or hinting at monkey, you are not leveling the playing field... you are making it harder for us all to progress.

Maybe try the tactics I used, instead, that got a Chicago/Indiana conservative democrat to choose George W. Bush over Al Gore.

ETA: the thread is on Page Four now, so I am probably too late in this edit. But the entire edit will be below here, not above here...

I should have clarified in my OP that I find many of Mrs. Obama's statements to be quit objectionable and even downright reprehensible, racist, foolish, and divisive. She deserves PLENTY of criticism.

However, well... see above.

It hurts his soul so much that he was the first First Man of the US!

He can’t deal with it. He needs to go for a run!

I don't give a shite about any of this. Once you said NASA and then Chicago - I decided you had no credibility.

Congrats, mongoloid.

I normally agree that attacking the first family is off limits.

However, Michelle puts herself out there by attacking other people in many different ways including personal attacks. Once she broke the barrier, turnabout is fair play.

It may not mean that however it does mean the person flying it is usually an idiot low class person just looking for attention. Similar to a tribal tattoo or tramp stamp.

Did this catch you by surprise or was it what normally happens around your father in law? sounds like southern Democrats to me, being that they just aren't young and naive.
