Unless Elon Musk “pulls a rabbit out of his hat,” Tesla will be bankrupt within four months, says John Thompson of Vilas Capital Management.

“Companies eventually have to make a profit, and I don’t ever see that happening here,” he told MarketWatch. “This is one of the worst income statements I’ve ever seen and between the story and the financials, the financials will win out in this case.”

“Tesla, without any doubt, is on the verge of bankruptcy,” he told clients in an email over the weekend. He explained that funding will be hard to come by in the face of problems in delivering the Model 3, declining demand for the Model S and X, extreme valuation and a likely downgrade of its credit rating by Moody’s from B- to CCC.

“As a reality check, Tesla is worth twice as much as Ford [estimate of the enterprise value of both companies], yet Ford F-0.09% made 6 million cars last year at a $7.6 billion profit while Tesla made 100,000 cars at a $2 billion loss,” Thompson said. “Further, Ford has $12 billion in cash held for ‘a rainy day’ while Tesla will likely run out of money in the next 3 months. I’ve never seen anything so absurd in my career.”

Tesla declined to comment on Thompson’s views.

I wouldn't argue your comment about Musk overall, but it would be nice to see what Tesla could do if it was allowed to actually compete in all state markets.

Ford is going to use those cash reserves to snatch up alot of the intellectual property during the courthouse auction.

That car wreck last week in California that killed the "driver" of the self-driving Tesla car is not going to help Musk's credibility.

Lol, I mean that's not much of a hedgefund.

Stock down 8% today, but I'm not sure this guy has much credibility at all. More like some writer finding someone that will say what he needs them to say.

This same dude was short on Tesla in 2017 and 2016 and 2015 and 2014 and maybe farther back but I got tired of searching and editing this post

Not saying he's wrong now but if you keep making the same prediction every year you'll be right eventually

Tesla is sitting on 3B+ in cash and most of their debt is convertible, not to mention they can go and get some funding from if needed.

Who would invest money? The people who are already invested, this thing isn't going to Chapter 11. anytime soon. I do believe he's got MAX a couple of years to show some results/progress before some change is demanded. It does burn cash, even for a high-growth technology company.

He's lucky we are in a crazy long bull run or the markets wouldn't be as kind. IMO.

Moody's downgraded Tesla's corporate debt to Caa1 today and assigned a negative outlook.
quote:

What does a Caa1 rating mean?

Definition: A rating within speculative grade Moody's Long-term Corporate Obligation Rating.

Obligations rated Caa1 are judged to be of poor standing and are subject to very high credit risk.
