They said the family had gotten worried and by using Find My Phone they could tell the dads phone was in the condo and hadn’t moved in a week. Sounds like they likely died the first night of their vacation

Or probably just a gas leak. They dont have the codes and building standards we have.

So then why did it take a week to find them and why would that not be released as a suspected reason?

I'm not saying that's not a possibility, but this situation is fishy as hell to say the least. An accident like that happens in the USA, I don't see the Mexicans acting weird about it.

I would also think that because of those building codes they'd have O2 sensors more regularly?

It was released as the suspected reason and why would you be looking for a family that’s not missing? Their US relatives reported them missing yesterday and Mexican authorities found them a few hours later in the condo after recieving a welfare check request from US authorities

If that were the case, housekeeping would have found them.

The original story said it took Mexican authorities over a week to respond and that they had no idea what the cause of death was but no foul play was suspected.

If that has changed, then I'm glad.

But Carbon monoxide poisoning is not something you dick around with, if that killed the family then they were clearly airing out the condo and had some kind of an idea what happened unlike the original report.

Does Mexico require adding Mercaptan to natural gas so that you can smell it? If they had the stove on and didn't realize it, that would easily explain what happened.

It didn't, because nobody was looking for them.

They arrived on the 15th, and let friends/ family know they arrived safely.
They were supposed to be back on the 21st. When they didn't show up people realized that nobody had heard from them since they check in. They were reported missing on the 22nd and found that day in their condo.

They probably got their that night, exhausted from traveling and the first thing they did was probably put a "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door and go to sleep. I assume they passed away in their sleep that first night due to gas and just nobody thought to look until they didn't come home.

It was a condo, most condo rentals don't do daily housekeeping.

Ha, I understand how it worked. The original story that came out was very fishy, different than the current story. Now that the facts are coming out, it seems definitely like a gas poisoning I agree.

So is Mexico now BYOGD? Bring your own gas detector? for any vacation?

I went to Mexico in January. Stayed at a nice resort in Playa Mujeres and had an awesome time. I also run a lifestyle brand and had a photographer take me off resort to a private beach. It was sketchy as hell driving there as the whole route was on a backroad driving past compounds with lookout towers, but the beach was incredible and the people running it were amazing.

REUTERS: Iowa family of four found dead in Mexico killed by gas

quote:

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - An Iowa family of four found dead at their vacation condominium in a Mexican seaside resort suffocated from gas, according to autopsies, local authorities said on Saturday.

There were no signs of foul play or suicide, Quintana Roo state prosecutors said in a statement. Civil protection experts examined the condo’s gas installations and would issue their findings later, the statement said.

The bodies of Kevin Sharp, 41, his 38-year-old wife, Amy, and their children Sterling, 12, and Adrianna, 7, of Creston, Iowa, were discovered early on Friday by authorities in the small coastal resort on Akumal on the Yucatan Peninsula, about an hour from Cancun.

A spokeswoman for the state prosecutors office said officials could not comment on whether the owner of the condo could face any liability until after investigations were completed.

There are a number of places in the U.S. I would stop going to long before I stopped gong to Mexico.

frick Mexico. I was in Puerto Vallarta a few years ago and used my credit card once...at a golf course. 3 weeks after I got home I got my card bill and there was almost 2 grand in charges at all kinds of places. So someone at the golf course had a little shopping spree. Thankfully my credit card wiped away all the charges.

And the stories about bartenders in Cancun spiking drinks with bad liquor, along with high crime everywhere, just make it very undesirable. Outside resorts, the place is very 3rd world. I'll never go back.

What about the Hamptons? Third world or lifestyles of the rich and famous?

Vitas Gerulaitus died of CO poisoning in Southampton from an improperly installed pool heater. It didn't affect real estate values and people still visit there.

This happens all the time in America and probably the rest of the world, too. Mexico doesn't have the market cornered on CO poisoning.
