Thank you . I’m not saying “ don’t go”. By all means, go. It’s beautiful and fun. I’m just saying I’m not going . Too many alternatives I prefer . And I don’t like the “ vibe” of it anymore . It’s the same way I feel about New Orleans. It just feels wrong , like some malevolence floating in the air . That’s a personal thing , a matter of personal perception . Odds are if you went 100 times to either you’d be safe 100 times.

I was like there less than year ago. Pecker if you want to go, than go and be fine with it.
Mexico used to be my #1 travel spot, but there is a trend and the tourists zones are becoming less safe.
The world is huge and there are just other places with less drama and equally beautiful to try. It might cost more or require longer travel, but in return I may reduce my families chance of becoming a headline or statistic.

Best to stay away from Europe as well then with the attacks in various countries there in the past few years. Don’t go to the Caribbean either because Zika.

How many foreigners were involved in that? Isolated incidents from years ago in the middle of well known cartel war.
There's neighborhoods and areas everywhere that you know are more dangerous, so you stay away from. Its the same with Mexico, especially when there's a highly publicized cartel war going on in a particular Mexican state. You'll be warned far in advance and know to stay away. Like I said, stay in your lane and don't insert yourself where you don't belong, and be respectful and you won't have any problems.
You're much more likely to get harrassed and questioned by the army or police in Mexico than we've knowingly run into Cartel people.
The Mexican people are very welcoming and extremely easy to make friends with, a lot of them can speak enough English to communicate as well. Make friends with some locals and go with them when you want to check out the night life and you'll find that in many Mexican cities you're just as safe as you would be doing the same thing in America.

Nobody is denying the cartel violence in Mexico. Its a very scary thing. If you live there. They aren't going after innocent tourists though, that would be a stupid move for them.
The corruption is a legitimate concern. Being victimized by the police or Mexican army is a legitimate concern. Petty criminals are absolutely something you should look out for. Just like any country people see tourists and want to try and take advantage of you, and just like anywhere when you're out drinking at night you need to watch your back not to get mugged or drugged or whatever, but you should always try your best to look out for that stuff when out drinking.
But you DON'T need to worry about on your vacation is getting pulled out of your hotel in y out sleep and beheaded by a cartel for no reason.... Maybe do a little more research on your hotel after this incident.
But if an American goes to Mexico and ends up killed by a cartel then its almost certain that once in Mexico they went out of their way to put themselves in danger.
Nobody is denying that Mexico is a very flawed place that has its share of internal conflict, but the level of danger and threat against your life that many people seem to believe about Mexico is just highly misinformed.
If you're citing cartel violence as a reason not to go to Mexico as a tourist for vacation then you need to turn off Narcos and find a new Netflix show.

My most recent trip was first week of March, start of the "spring break" season. We stay in a gated community about an hour south of Cancun and spend the week diving cenotes.

I used to spend a lot of time in Mexico in the 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s. Never again, frick that place. It’s not the same.

Honestly there are much more dangerous places in the USA than some parts of Mexico. I have been to the tourist areas of Mexico as well as some of the less desirable areas and never felt unsafe because I didn't go to areas of the cities I was told to stay away from just like I do in any major city in the USA.
