So you need a license in Louisiana to be a florist?

Louisiana Is the Only State to License Florists. Gov. Edwards Says It Should Stop.

Saw this from another thread and kind of floored me. Only state in the country.

You can't help but laugh at this comment from Mike Strain:

quote:

Without licensing, he claims, "you're going to set up a situation where anybody can open a floral shop and there's no method to regulate the industry and protect the public."

What exactly are we protecting the public from?

Doesn't do anyone any good. I can just buy flower from unlicensed dealers across state lines and transport them here to murder people with.

florist friend says its the biggest BS money grab racket she's ever seen. Guaranteed to fail the first test so they can get another $1000 out of you before you sell a flower stuck in a jar. literally.

ETA: her "test" was a FUNERAL ARRANGEMENT. failed it. paid another grand, passed.

I just didn't. Just seems unnecessary to me...and 49 other states as well.

It is a nod to the former GOP state chairman Roger Villere, a florist, and should end immediately.

Shame on Strain and Jindal before him for failing to end this stupid license.

(You shouldn't have to have a license to cut hair either.)

Licensed florists want people who want to be florists to have to get licenses.

Themselves.

Without oversight and protection, the public would implode.

The florist lobby can't be that strong

Unless maybe 1-800-Flowers is behind all of this!

I've been buying black market flowers for several years. Anyone who is still paying full retail for flowers now that the dark web exists is an idiot.

Prime example of why we need common sense flower control. No one wants to take away your daisy's, but those fricking petunias can get rekt.

This case arose when the brothers of Saint Joseph Abbey, a century-old Benedictine monastery in Covington, La., began to sell their handmade wooden caskets in late 2007 to support their educational and health care expenses. The state board moved to shut down the monks’ fledgling business before it sold even one casket because it was a crime in Louisiana for anyone but a government-licensed funeral director to sell caskets to the public. The monks and IJ brought suit in federal court on the ground that this arbitrary restriction served no legitimate public purpose and existed only to funnel money to the funeral-director cartel.

This is almost the exact thing that happened to those monks trying to sell caskets in Louisiana. They ended up in Federal Court and won. The Federal Court saw how ridiculous this is and would probably have the same opinion of the Louisiana Floral License....
