A pillar of Sherwood Forest died last week.

If you grew up in Sherwood Forest and went to Broadmoor, chances are you knew the Cheeks. Mr. Ed died last week at the age of 89. His daughters were cheerleaders and made the homecoming court a few times. He was nothing short of a classy gentleman. Never once saw him get mad. His passion was that yard on the corner of East Milburn and Woodcliff. It broke his heart when the problems that come with age meant he had to hire someone to do it for him. He always listened, always had a funny joke, and gave us kids someone to look up to.
Funny thing is I was mad when he first moved into the neighborhood. That was the last vacant lot on the block and where we kids played baseball. Parks weren't in vogue as they are now so green space was treasured.
I went to senior prom and took my date to Chalet Brandt. As things turned out, he and Mrs. Cheek went there that same night. When it came time for my check, the waiter informed me that he took care of the bill. When my parents divorced, he took my little brother under his wing. He was loved by many and respected by more. He will be missed and deserves to be remembered.
His obit on Legacy.com is below.

Sorry for the loss of one of your childhood mentors. We were blessed back then to grow up around a lot of great families.

WTF ? I got a call at my house last week on my caller ID in BR that said "Edward Cheek". My wife and I both asked our kids "who is Edward Cheek"? I am not kidding. Am I in a Japanese horror movie?

I grew up in SF and went to Broadmoor and the name is familiar. Just can't picture the house right now. RIP Mr. Cheek.

Is this the same Ed Cheek that was also an independent sales rep for garden supplies at one time?

Sounds like a legend of the area. I’ve been around here for over 30 years so I can definitely appreciate that story and RIP

Is the creepy guy that walks around Sherwood and Broadmoor in a mailmans outfit still around?

I grew up on Woodcliff and never knew them. Did he fly a Louisiana Tech flag from the balcony? If yes, I know the house and once shot a squirrel in the head with an acorn out of sling shot out of that tree in his front yard. It was an amazing shot, and no one witnessed it. That was a good neighborhood to grow up in.

Across the street from that one. Hayes lived there, then the Seacuts, and I forgot who came after.

That's when you know someone is a good man. This is an act of pure selflessness.

How’s that area doing? Knew the Prince’s on Havenwood but I’ve heard it’s taking a hit. Schutzman lives back there too.

Sounds like a great time to live in that neighborhood. My parents lived on 461 WoodCliff drive, north side of GoodWood. Had a childhood friend that lived on East Millburn. His mother sold real estate.
Great times during the 80's.
