President Trump is signing an order Thursday that imposes tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from all foreign countries, while carving out an exception for Canada and Mexico for now while NAFTA negotiations are underway, White House officials told Fox News.
The administration is placing a 25 percent tariff on all steel, and 10 percent on aluminum across the board.
“We have to protect & build our Steel and Aluminum Industries while at the same time showing great flexibility and cooperation toward those that are real friends and treat us fairly on both trade and the military,” the president tweeted early Thursday.

I’m wondering when he imposes them on Mexico and Canada for them being used as a pass-through by countries such as China to evade tariffs.

All in good time.

if that were the actual reason for the tariff, he wouldn't be using it as a bargaining chip by offering to exempt the largest and 4th largest foreign supplier of our steel

of course he is. mainly because people told him he shouldn't.

It's a NAFTA play. I don't quite understand it but I'm confident it has something to do with the current NAFTA negotiations.
ETA: or he wants to make Make Mexico and Canada Great Again b/c with the current structure of NAFTA the tariffs will be ineffective.

So punishing our largest trading partner (EU) is a NAFTA play? This will not go over well. I don't know if you have seen how they are treating the UK in brexit talks. They don't seem to be in a mood to frick around.

How much steel and aluminum do we get from European countries? Close the zero, right?

This is the real issue.

This is likely to be challenged at the WTO. It's giving preferential treatment to Canada and Mexico, while others that have most favored nation status with the US aren't receiving it. There has to be something else with these tariffs, and don't say national security--even though it has already been said.

ah, so not for national security at all then

quote:No. Germany accounts for 3%, and I’m sure there are others in the in 22% that are no in the top 10 import nations. But beyond EU South Korea (10%), Japan (5%); Taiwan (4%) are also in the top 10.

The EU makes up close to 20% of US steel imports. Most of which originates in Germany.
